This is my first tour usuing the Fw190 as my main gun.  Maybe its the new ride, maybe it's me. But something is getting much better.

All planes have 7 kills and have been killed 17 times against fscott in the fw190A-5.

fscott, I have to beg to differ... you see I have just heard all along that the FW is sooo inferior to the USAAF, IJA, and of coarse the dreaded F4u-1C   soo its impossible that you can excell in the FW

FW190A5 is a fine plane. Excellent initial climb rate, good turn rate (for a LW fighter) excellent roll, adequate guns. Bit slow and ugly stalls with little warning when scissoring.

Sucks above 16-20k.

In a P-51 vs 190A5 fight the 51 can dictate the fight. If the lat gets low, where A5 shines, the 51 can extend at will.

To me, the A5 feels quite inferior compared with the A8. A8 has better deck speed and armament thus making it a better arena plane. A5 has a little better turning capability but it matters little as it is still quite poor and I don't dogfight with German planes anyway.

I did a few tests with the a5 and a8 just to see what difference there was. What I found was that the a5 was a better accelerator, it dove just as quick as the a8 (they both reached 570mph in a vertical dive at ground zero from 9000 feet), and it reached 325 mph significantly quicker than the a8 in level flight with wep. Additionally it climbs about 500 fpm quicker.

The only advantage I see with the a8 is it's 13mm mgs.  You can put 4x20mm cannons on the a5 and still use the 7.7mm mgs.  That's the configuration I use.

In arena, speed, acceleration and climbing is what you need... also that plane has to turn a bit more than a dart does.
Yak is good example of this, though, missing those guns and ammunition, so its not as popular as it would be with the guns.

190A5 turns and climbs better, two points to fly it instead of A8.
Though, somehow I like more of a8
at least I know how to survive and kill in it, better than in any other plane

Pst, fscott.. its 7.92mm

I fly the Fw190A5 a lot. In fact I fly it now almost exclusively.

When I came here I tested a lot of planes, first I liked a lot the P38, but when I tested the Fw190A5 I fell in love with it.

Its responsible at all speeds, possess an awesome roll rate and very good initial high speed turning. Its low speed handling is higly underrated, it cant turn well but has a wonderful handling (until you stall, that is   )

I have tried the Fw190A8 in tour10. Compared with the A5 its a worse air superiority fighter. The Fw190A5 is able to B-n-Z, but can close the fight tight when needed. The 190A8 is almost dead if it loses its energy advantage, the A5 holds the acceleration ace. In a lone wolf sortie I find the Fw190A-5 a more survivable ride.

If you are impressed by your success in A5, go figure if I am...in tour 11 I have a 45/12 K/D and I am only a newbie with less than a month on the Main Arena (but with a lot of time in H2H,thats true too   ).

Oh, and I disagree with SageFIN. The Fw190A5 is a more survivable plane, given that you choose the disengage moment wisely. 10mph more on the deck wont save your butt in a main arena full of P51s, Yaks and F4Us. Agility and acceleration will do it given the chance.

Fscott, I fly the 2x20mm configuration. I found that the MGFF screws my aiming a lot due their different ballistics. And the handling and rollrate is better without them.

Fishu, IMHO better MGs are not an advantage. When your cannons go winchester in a 190, its time to RTB. A 190A8 has simply no chance to stay in the six of a con for the time needed to do fatal damage with 13mm MGs. If I could choose it I would delete them at all. Its worthless weight from my point of view.

If I only could fly my X-wing in Aces High...
