Strange Maachi Landing
« on: November 19, 1999, 04:23:00 PM »
Loaded up .39

Jumped in a Maachi, flew a beautiful 2 kill, one piece sortie and head for home (f21).

Came in for a standard landing, got her down on the main gears with no problem, and my speed and vspeed were both low. Then as I got on the brakes, the tail started to settle gently.

As soon as the tail wheel hit, it broke off. Tore the entire tail off, spun the plane 180 degrees, broke off the right main gear, then tore the right wing off.

And it wasn't even a rough landing   And TRUST ME I have alot of experience with rough landings.

Strange.

Just reproduced this, it wasn't a fluke, extremely weak tail wheel on Maachi.

Thx for the heads up.
Just flew my first macchi sortie, 3 kills (that machine is awesome) then tried my very first macchi landing. Didn't land very carefully, was fast, touched down hard and took almost all the runway to come to a stop, but no structural failures ;-)
I'll try it again soon...

Wow, verm, I made at least three landings with C.205 and though I had a helluva time keeping the tail down(that nose is heavy) I never lost the tail assembly.  Hit the runway pretty hard too.

It is a sweet ride though.  Loops like a bat outta hell

Try a 2 pointer verm, not a 3 pointer and all should be well.

Thats whats strange Xela, when I 3 point land it no problems, but when I land it correctly on the main gear and then brake, and then the tail settles, thats when it happens.

I have learned how to land it without this happening, but it seems like I am doing exactly the wrong thing.

It's real .. just started the engine taxied forward a few yard stomped the brakes and the tail lifted a bit .. as it settles down ..*CRUNCH* tail wheel breaks off..
This shouldn't happen..

N1K2 has also weak tail.
Just turn on engine, full power, pull the stick and tail wrecks apart before 20mph
