AH Acceleration Chart
« on: November 22, 1999, 08:58:00 AM »
Did an acceleration test for all AH fighters with the following criteria:
1. 100% internal fuel, normal armament
2. climb to 10,000 feet from F1(elevation: 5000 feet)
3. climb speed at 200mph IAS
4. at 10,000 feet, 200 mph IAS, level out, then immediately engage WEP for one minute.

The aircraft are list by final speed after one minute's time:

1. La-5FN @ 310mph IAS
2. Bf 109G-10 @ 300mph IAS
3. P-51D @ 295mph IAS
3. Spitfire IX @ 295mph IAS
4. C.205 @ 280mph IAS
5. N1K2 @ 275mph IAS
6. Fw 190A-8 @ 270mph IAS

What suprised me was that not only is the P-51D a real fast ride, it is also a very quick ride too.  Never thought it was this quick, and with 100% fuel capacity too.  Tied with the Spitfire IX even.

Pyro, is the Mustang's zip due to the laminar wing?  I know the P-51 doesn't have anywhere near the power loading of the first three or four aircraft on the list.

6. Fw 190A-8 @ 270mph IAS

Ouch! No wonder planes like Spitfire pull away from me often. I guess nose down it might be bit different?

I may be off here, but I am sure I have seen it mentioned that the P51 was one of the fastest accellerating planes of the war. with only the P38 being better?

I mean that wing design is super dooper slick for drag loss, and mustang surely has the power.

Sorrow, I'd say it has low drag wing, but its power loading is way lower than than of planes it now outaccelerates.

Hmmm again

sorrow: that what I know of P-51, it was SLOW with accerlating.

Just wondering, why there isn't TAS readings also?
Just that I've noticed 109 has IAS indicator ahead of TAS at 500ft, but other planes has IAS indicator behind TAS indicator at 500ft (well, C.205 was one another with same thing)

Drag force is proportional to the square of speed, as far as I know.

So, P-51D can count on its superior drag charcteristics, but speed influence on drag force is far greater. And it is the engine power which fights the drag to accelerate. We know who has the stronger engine between P-51D and G-10, as well which plane is significantly lighter.

Also, 300 mph IAS at 10kft is not so fast, and should favor the horsepower/weight ratio over the drag characteristics even more, shouldn't it ?

P.S.
Yes, I like the 109. I'd take the K model, please

I have 205s catch up to my pony all the time in flat runs.  I won't bother trying to out run or out climb anything... if I don't have an obvious E advantage I won't attack.

If you do the test for a shorter period, and at a lower starting speed, the P-51 should drop in the rankings.

Swoosh,

Do not turn when you are running. I think it was you I tried to explain the reasons why you get cought while running?

1) 0G. When starting to run when you were low on speed, push forward on the stick and keep the 'accel' gage at 0. That means you have completely eliminated one component of the total drag that slows down your acceleration.

2. Turning. Don't turn, roll and/or yaw quickly to check your six. If you turn the pursuing fighter has to only place his gun sight little ahead of you and he will probably start gaining on you, because his circle has a smaller radii. Or perhaps if it is obvious that you will be turning to direction X to head home, he can turn to that direction sharply, then level out 0G a bit to accelerate again and catch up to you by flying straight while you make a longer trip doing a wide turn. When you turn the pursuer has an easy job of cutting the corner to make up for his slower speed.
