Macchi C.205 V ..Veltro
HISTORY - The Macchi C. 205V «Veltro» was certainly the best italian fighter produced in quantity during
the Second Worid War. A progressive development of the C. 202 «Foigore», it differed mainiy in lhe more powerful Daimier Benz DB605 engine.
Although initially thea rmament remained of two 12,7 mm machine guns in the fuselage and two 7,7 mm guns in the wings, from the third series onwards these wing guns were replaced by two Mauser MG151 20 mm cannons. The C. 205 V first flew on the 19th April 1942 and thanks to the possibility of using large components of the C.202, after only six months was being consigned to the units.
It began its wartime career escorting ships and aircraft between ltaly and Tunis resulting in an excellent match to the opposing Spitfires and Curtiss P. 40. lt reached the frontline units during the great allied air offensive just before the invasion of Sicily.
It took part in the defence of central Italy.
After the 8th September, the aircraft was used by the Co-belligerant Air Force and the R.S.I. in great numbers, with very good results in the defence of the towns In the North. At the end of the war the surviving aircraft were used for a time with the italian Air Force initially as fighters, and later on as trainers.
The manouverability of this aircraft was classical of the Macchi fighters, with the edge on speed to be able to meet on equal terms the best allied fighters; it resulted as an excellent pilot's aircraft and still remembered as one of Italy's best and most complete fighter aircraft.
