So I was using the search button looking for an old post of mine and found this - you my friend deserve an answer!
In short, the 997s is the best thing I have ever bought in my life. I've had it for 3-4 months now and put nearly 12,000 miles on it... it's probably why I never saw this post! I would get off work at night and just take drives for 2 or 3 hours because it's just so much damn fun!
I'm not sure if you're familiar with Orange County, California, but there is a road called the Ortega Highway that runs between San Juan and Lake Elisinore. It's basically a windy road that goes goes through a small mountain range. Going the posted speed limits it takes about 45 minutes to go over. However, late night in a Porsche with no traffic, it takes me between 16 and 17 minutes! There are posted turns with 25mph and 35 mph limits that you can take going 60mph to 70mph - it's absolutely unbelievable.
There are a few parts on the highway that allow you to pass, and it's just so much fun to throttle it and go around the slower traffic. On other portions of the road, there are turnouts that slower traffic is supposed to use to allow faster traffic by. Most people pull into them and let you by. Every once in awhile, there will be someone that thinks they are going fast and won't use the turnouts. It's always fun to blow past them once passing is allowed.
On one of my night drives there was a car behind me that I couldn't discern by the headlights, but it was clearly doing it's best to keep up with me. I'd pull ahead, then when I'd reach a slower car it would catch up. When the slower car used a turnout, we'd commence speeding again. At the end of the road, we got to the top of the hill and the car behind me pulls into the second lane on my left. I will never forget this, but it was this young kid, maybe 8 - 10 years old in the passenger seat with the BIGGEST smile on his face. His dad was in an S55 AMG. I gave the kid a thumbs up and he waved. Is was totally awesome.
I think I've rambled enough! The car is extremely confidence inspiring, It wants you to go faster all of time. The sound is intoxicating. It sticks to the road so well, it's remarkable. I've let a few friends and family drive it, and it's almost more fun to see them enjoying it! It's difficult to understand just how fun these machines are until you drive one. If you're ever in the area, shoot me a message and I'll take you for a spin!
