Voice Transmission Problems
« on: January 09, 2010, 09:12:27 AM »
So, I've been having voice transmission problems for a while now. Everyone says its real weak, or cant here me at all. I've had the same problem in MS Flight Simulator. Thought maybe it was my cheapy headset, so went out and bought the Plantronics Gamecom 377, still not the best but better than what I had.

Get it plugged in last night, still weak, people cant hear me. So, I went in and found a microphone test in the "Sound and Audio Devices" folder in the control panel. When I test the microphone, the little slider shows nothing. All of the volume sliders are maxed out, and I mean all of them. I have to hold the mic all the way up to my mouth and "speak up" in order for anything to register on the test.

I keep seeing SigmaTel High Definition Audio when I go into any sound sections of the control panel. I think this may be the sound card I have...its a Dell computer, bought it at the beginning of 2006...

Am I going to need a new sound card to fix this voice transmission problem, and if so, recommendations? Any help is appreciated.

Look for a check box setting on the microphone tab of your sound card's mixer that says something on the order of "+20db gain" or "Microphone boost".  Many sound cards require this before they will amplify the microphone to useable levels.

You didn't say, but if it's XP, most of the time you can get to this setting if you go to control panel, sound and audio devices, click advanced, select advanced again on Microphone.  I *believe* that this is the generic way to access it - every sound card I've ever used has a device specific mixer that will generally also allow you to access the setting, but it's done differently for each one.

As has been mentioned, if you'd rather not guess what you sound like, go into an online arena (training works well), tune your radio 5 to your own id, and you can hear exactly what others will hear as you are testing.

Just remember that some changes wont take effect until you exit and restart the game, so to ensure best results plan to exit and restart after each one.

Hope this helps....

Very likely the sigma high def audio is not a separate card, but on-board sound on the motherboard.

In which case ANY pci sound card is going to do better for you.

Personally I've had good luck with the Creative soundblasters.
But partially thats because I've learned how to install just the drivers, not all the other crap software.

You do not need a latest and greatest sound card. Any cheap PCI based card should do fine.

Thanks for the responses, I did find the "microphone boost" on the mixer settings. Buried would be an understatement, but I did find it. Seems to work better, I tuned myself on vox and it sounded ok. We'll see how it goes. :salute
