Etymology
According to an article by self-described New York Times "language maven" William Safire, the term was first used by High Altitude fuel conservation expert pilot and game developer Paul "VOSS/Chalenge" Hinds in 2010.[1] Hinds used the term in a 2010 forum thread, "New Bomber Tactic (not so new) ," mainly as a self-descriptive term to describe himself as he flies above 35,000ft while finding new ways to conserve fuel at high altitudes. Descriptions of bat-like people at this altitude has been attributed to the lasting effects of a heart attack enducing bite by the dreaded and often maligned Red Scorpion and also from chemotherapy treatments from a bout of brain cancer. One explanation for the current political use is that the term was derived from the name of liberal author George Monbiot but we all know it's because Chalenge said it and he's cool so we give him credit.

Chalenge aka Voss has been closely associated with "Moonbats" since his flights into Iraqi airspace as a member of a super secret intelligence gathering unit. In the early stages of the first Gulf War he was shot down in his F16 while on a superduper secret mission into enemy territory. He survived after finding a family of "Moonbats" that took him in. He later married the Chief "Moonbats" daughter and brought her back to the USA. He now lives in Moonrovia Arkansas with his wife Moonronica and their 2 children. He frequently participates in The annual "Moonbat" telethon on Faux News.
