This would be the dates that the aircraft entered service, not its first test flight or first day of production.

British
Boston Mk III           (Jan. 41)
Hurricane Mk I         (Mar. 1938)
Hurricane Mk IIC     (April. 1941)
Hurricane Mk IID     (Sept.. 1941)
Lancaster III            (March 1942)
Mosquito Mk VI      (May 1943)
Seafire Mk II           (Oct. 1942)
Spitfire Mk I            (Aug. 1938)
Spitfire Mk V           (Feb. 1941)
Spitfire Mk VIII       (Oct. 1943)
Spitfire Mk IX         (April 1943)
Spitfire Mk XIV      (April 1944)
Spitfire Mk XVI      (Nov 1944)
Tempest Mk V        (June 1944)
Typhoon Mk I         (Sept. 1941)

Seafire Mk II           (Jun. 1942)
Spitfire Mk I            (Dec. 1938)
Spitfire Mk V           (Mar. 1941)
Spitfire Mk VIII       (Jul. 1943)
Spitfire Mk IX         (Jun. 1942)
Spitfire Mk XIV      (Jan. 1944)
Spitfire Mk XVI      (Dec. 1944)
Tempest Mk V        (Apr. 1944)

That's what I remember reading from Alfred Price and other Osprey Book authors. Yikes, pal. Change your sources :P

Interesting. I always figured the Typhoon entered service in the latter years. Nice list.

problem is a lot of the aircraft of the defenders were in combat before they were "in service" depending on your definition ...

i.e. "in service" can vary in meaning where as in combat is a more specific term especially if you use say first encounter with enemy or first kill of enemy as that will pretty much be a very specific point in time.

I think your F6F-5 date is wrong.  I don't have the exact numbers, but the F6F-3 entered service in 1943.  I don't think the -5 version was introduced until 1944.

Ya, I think i may scrap this untill we define entered service and have a better understanding of what we are looking for.....

Im thinking every aircraft will have to be sub grouped for its guns/ord packs as well.
But finding the info on such matters could take years. Im willing to spend time on it but not a life time.
