Wrong.   If a wing portion is shed, it won't INSTANTLY, reduce to the speed of flyable cruise.   It will gradually come down (if flyable), but not an immediate stop.

Ok, it seem weird that the plain is getting more speed with a bighole in its the wing. In this case, the plane DIN'T reduse speed at all.

I lost both wings on a Spit 14 and flew for over 2 minutes with just a lawn dart.  Was really weird.  Kinda had to do a non-stop slow barrel roll to keep it in the air.  That 14 sure has some HP!  I will try to find the film for post...

Furball once posted a film where he lost both wingtips of his 262 and he managed to keep it flying and fighting... it was funny, the wingtips were tore apart simmetrically, so he didn't even had to do much work to keep it level... I must still have it somewhere, I'll upload it! ;)

I would imagine he had better success keeping it flying.  The torque on the 14 kept rolling me right!  Would love to see the film! :aok

You're lucky, I found it immediately. :) Even though Furbie doesn't really fight, just flies (and HO :D)

I ran into a bit of bad luck on this hop, but still made it back to land with some scalps.

One thing I see here, is that we don't lose "half" of a wing.  Closer to a third of it.  I don't think the planes should fail to fly with that loss, but should be (and are) much more difficult to control and land safely.  Mine sure feels slower too.  But I need to land at a higher speed than normal.

The planes gives the pilot a last chance to get out of the heat and try to make a safe landing.
But i don't think it out run at the same level, or maintain the top speed.

la-7's are VERY easy to fly with one wing and have to remember the la-5 is slower than a la7

LA7 and LA5 have the exact same engine, however they moved certain things around on the aircraft, and reducing drag, therefore you have a faster plane

The La-7 utilized more alloys.

Hey Grinch, not sure if ya remember, but I shot the crap out of an F4U at 8k...he was about as shot up as mtnmans F4 pic, dropped 7k, and outran both you(in a 38 I think), and I(In K4) to make it home and land kills.  Im not the sharpest knife in the drawer, but I would think that missing even 1/3 of your wing would reduce your speed considerably.
