For example, according to Eddie Izzard it's got a lot to do with flags.  ie, if you've got a flag then you're a country.  Which is how the English managed to take over so many places that are now countries during the empire building era.  They'd show up, plant a flag and say something like "I claim this land in the name of the King!" and some fella in a skirt would show up and say "You can't claim us, we live here!".

that's almost the same way I classify towns....if it has a pub it is a town....if it doesn't then time and money has been wasted by putting a name to the place

What are the defining features that make a country a country and which of those does England (or Scotland and Wales) have? I'm Scottish BTW. Or is that British?

Isn't it the difference between nationality and citizenship? You cannot be a Scottish citizen but you can be a British citizen. But you are Scottish which isn't the same as being English. Even though we all in these islands have been anglicised in one form or other, not to mention further afield.

Whatever you say about the English aren't you glad it was the English who got to all of us first rather the Russians or the Germans
