Great story. The plane is a bit over modeled though.   I don't think I want all of that stuff modeled on AH.

Bearcats. ummmmmmmmmmm Bearcats!

 http://home.att.net/~C.C.Jordan/Grumman.html

"With the Navy completely satisfied with the little powerhouse, an order for 2,023 F8F-1 fighters was placed. The first fighters being delivered to VF-19 on May 21, 1945, just 6 months after the prototype made its first flight."

 http://www.rwebs.net/ghostsqd/f8f.htm

"Two squadrons, VF-18 and VF-19 were equipped with F8F-1's, and training was expedited in order to get the new fighter into service against Japanese suicide attack planes in the Pacific. VF-19 was onboard the carrier USS Langley, enroute across the Pacific, when the war ended on August 16, 1945."

http://www.multied.com/Navy/CV27Langley.html

"After touching Ulithi and Pearl Harbor, she steamed to San Francisco, arriving 3 June for repairs and modernization. She departed 1 August for the forward area, and reached Pearl Harbor 8 August. While there, word arrived that hostilities had ended."

The Langley, CV-27, made it to Pearl on 8 August 45 with VF-19, the first operationally deployed Bearcat squadron.

Thus saving us all from a whinefest that would make the -1C hoopla the smallest of sideshows in comparison.

"just 6 months after the prototype made its first flight."

So it's really a 1944 plane by some folks standard?

Zig,

I doubt we'll ever see it, perk or not.

The howls would be heard from here to eternity.

Only really two squadrons that could be called operational. Only one of those that even got close to 1/2 way to the front. No shots fired in anger.

Noooooo chance.

Too bad though. My older sister is dating a guy that flew Corsairs in Korea and flew the Bearcat as well. He's got some interesting tales and insights. The Bearcat he flew was just the Ops "recreational" bird. You could just go sign it out and ratrace whenever you wanted too. He LOVED that thing.

F4,

He lives in DC. I've just seen him on a couple of layovers.

My sister just sees him now and then. Long story, she's a 5 year widow of a Silver Star winner. (He earned it, too.) She's easing back into circulation.

I've just had a few beers with him a few times while my brother and I tried to embarass thisi Navy guy at at Mexican restaurant. Not easy to do, you know. I think we managed when we joined the Mariachi band.

Hasn't been like a detailed debrief. More like three pilots swapping lies.

Still, he liked the Corsair a LOT. He liked the Bearcat even MORE.

Next time I see him I'll try for detail, but no promises. What should I ask?

Stall speed at combat load? Maneuverability at approach? Gawd, I'll be banned from AH for life if I come back with more anecdotal evidence!

(Goose: Jeez, sometimes I crack myself up!)

Just re-read that bearcat article.

Did you guys notice this one?

"(Common practice in the Mustang is to preset two units of right rudder trim, but contrary to popular belief, this is not for control on the takeoff roll, it is simply a preset trim for the after-takeoff climb. In actual fact, it REDUCES the available rudder control when full rudder is applied.)"
