SoftTh / triple monitor upgrade
« on: June 02, 2010, 09:41:25 AM »
I am looking to upgrade to a 3 monitor configuration.  I have 3 monitors with a 19”, 22”, 19” setup.  Currently I have 1 9800gt video card and I am looking at doing a SoftTh setup by getting another video card.  I would like to get another 9800gt so I also have the SLI option available to me.  I will NOT be doing the TripleHead2Go option because of $$ and it does not work with different resolutions like I have.

Question:
Does anyone run a similar configuration with 2 9800gt cards?  I am wondering if there is enough horsepower to make the game smooth with SoftTh.

Have you considered eyefinity?  The new ATI cards can support multiple monitors like that without needing special hardware/software.

Looks like the 5830's are going for about $200-230.

I'm not quite sold on the whole SLI thing.  2X the power consumption, 2X the heat, 2X the headache... for a 10-15% increase in performance.

Tigger is right. Sell the 9800 and get Eyefinity.

Thanks for the feedback.  That seems like the best option.  The 58xx series is pretty nice.

Pushing 3 displays worth of pixels is going to require some serious hardware power. It's something you can't really do on the cheap unless you're going to be happy with 15-20FPS and everything on poor quality.

I would like to try the 9800gt.  I have done a lot of reading and have found people claiming to be running 2 8800gt with success but I can't really find a good description of their setup and the resolution they are running.  I was hoping someone had some real world xp in Aces High to share

Ok so I finished my upgrade project.  I ended up getting an ATI 5850 using 3 19” monitors.  I know, “why not get bigger monitors”, in due time when $$$ allows.  After playing with the connections for a day I finally got it all worked out and let me just say…OMG!  If you are using 3 monitors, it is basically like getting 3 different hat views at once and not just a wider view.  I am not sure I am saying that correctly so here is an example.

Looking forward you get of course the head on view and your side monitors are showing you the 45 degree views.  In the greatest plane in the game “KI-84” , I can see the wings and everything in front of them as if you are using your hat to look 45 degrees right or left.  When circling a base in a bank, I can see the airfield to my 45 degree left without even touching my hat.

The other views are just a great!  When looking left, it is like seeing 3 hat positions at the same time.  Looking left I can see from my tail to the nose of my plane with 1 hat position.  Looking rear is the same.

Some cons of the setup.  The 45 degree views I mentioned earlier stretch a little on the outside of the monitors but that is not a big deal because most of the time it is your peripheral vision anyway and you do not notice.  Another con is actually looking around.  After playing for years, the act of actually looking left and right to see things versus just using the hat was an odd sensation.  Not really a con actually more realism I think.  My last negative is the transition between monitors.  I did my best in lining up the monitors but there is a slight blind spot as items transition from 1 monitor to another and their alignment.  When an item moves from 1 monitor to another it is not exactly where you expect it, maybe just a few pixels off.  Again no big deal I seem to be getting use to it already.

Anyway just wanted to wrap up my thread.  If anyone is considering this same setup and have the $$$ you should definitely do it.  It should help out with my game over all.  I know it won’t make me a better shot, nothing will , but it helps with the realism and alleviates lots of blind spots that someone could be sneaking up on you.

Best thing to do would be to record some footage and put it up on YouTube.

That is a great idea Kazaa.  I tried to do that but the options for saving a film do not support 3 monitors.  All of the resolutions options for the records are standard views.

It is nice to hear someone else running it.  I have been wanting to run 3 monitors for a long time but never bit the bullet to do the Matrox Triplehead.  SoftTh seemed pretty nice but I know a software solution is slower than a hardware one.  I was just about to do the SoftTh when Tigger29 in this thread reminded me of the Eyefinity.  Thanks Tigger29!!  The Eyefinity seems to have a good upgrade path.  The 5850 can run 3 monitors by itself.  So I have a couple of choices for upgrading.   Using crossfire I can add another card in the future and either run 6 monitors (I wish) or provide more horsepower to the existing display by moving one of the monitors to a parallel card.

Wanted to ask you about the Cross-Fire..Can you add another 5850 and run in cross fire mode with three monitors...Hopefully to improve performance and resolution...Example Can you run the High-Rez Pack 1024 with good frame rates?

That is my understanding is that you could run 2 cards and run 3 monitors across 2 cards or add additional monitors.  I have read configurations with 6 and even 12 display using crossfire technology.  This is just what I have read so I will not claim to be an expert.  I can just comment on my setup.

Performance for is me using the AH High Texture Pack:
Resolution = 3840x1024
FPS=60
