Call me whatever you like, but I don't think posting this was a great idea.

I have no problem with target shooting, shooting to eliminate pests, or (preferred) shooting to eat one of God's delicious creatures.

Going trigger happy just to try out a new gun on whatever walks, crawls, jumps or swims is in bad taste.

Sorry, these are considered a significant pest in New Zealand, they have no natural predators. Same for rabbits, feral goats, possums, and deer (yes deer are listed as a pest. Heck even Chamois and the endangered Himalayan Thar are pests here (non native, no natural predators).

The farmer is happy for me to get as many as I can, they NEVER go away, there's too many. If they get out of control poisons like 1080 are used (look up the effects of 1080 on mammals, it's not nice), so my method is far more humane.

And usually I do take them for meat, but I have plenty at the moment.

Decided to terrorize some bunnies today, no meat, just simple pure genocide. Instead of taking the Savage Mk2 .22 I took my Baikal 243.

I managed to get several hares, and the first one was this giant man eater.... it's hard to tell from the pic but it was huge. I took the top pic before turning it over as I wasn't sure what the other side looked like (ie what the 243 would do). Turns out I cut its throat, the head was near decapitated. Biggest surprise was that it was a doe, the body length alone was at least 50cm, and it hade shoulders like an east german swimmer.

Second one I hit did an awesome backflip into a nearby pond, obviously another east german swimmer  . Tonight she swims with the eels.

Yep rabbits are pests even here and foxes. Deer as well. Fair game as the saying goes. Waste not your tears on them. There used even be a bounty on crows. There was even talk of reintroducing it.

You have to separate interests here, population control in the absence of natural predators and indirect predator control in the sense that significant prey populations in close proximity to humans can cause issues. My farrier has lost two of his dogs to coyotes in just the last month (as an example). So while the post can be regarded as offensive and/or politically incorrect the underlying problem is real. I live in an urban area and yet have a deer population of 200+ literally just outside my backyard. Multiplied over similar communities and you have thousands of deer that cause significant property damage and loss of life (local police officer was killed just weeks ago responding to an emergency and hit a deer coming around a corner at high speed). The "solution" isn't very pretty but the underlying problems are very real.

Western Europeans are non-native, have no natural predictors, and have destroyed the fragile ecosystems all across North America (and of course most of the rest of the world).

They bring 'pests' like rats, snakes and even rabbits with them to every corner of the globe.

It's just too bad so many living creatures will die in such an unpleasant and painful death.

I understand all the underlying motives, like the guy loosing his dogs to coyotes, and the impact these pests have on native creatures.

I still say its just too bad.
