It seems like a single engine plane flying in this role would be very susceptible to small arms fire.
The journey is the destination.

What next, a John Deere tractor with a mini-gun?

That design has been flying for Years.  It was designed by Lelland Snow who built the first Ag Plane.  IT was called the 'Snow", it was a great flying plane, then he helped design the AgCat.  THe Agcat is still in use today.  The Agcat had some advantages on the Ag Tractor, The Cat, when it came off the ground it was ready to go to the field and work.  The early Ag Tractors had to fly around for a bit before it was ready to work.  With the introduction of the light weight Turbo prop engines that was over come.  Then the problem became getting the Tractor slowed down to get it turned around and back into the field.  When an ag plane is turning around it isnt making any money.  The agtractor is a very robust bird.  I have seen some NASTY crashes and the pilot will walk away most of the time.  I want one or two.

Yep, AirTractor, Inc. http://www.airtractor.com/

I worked at a full service Ag retailer and we have used both helicopters and planes for application of fungicide.  Both had their advantages, the helicopter was on the back of a gooseneck trailer and all we had to do was load up their poly tank with water and chemicals and one guy would park on the side of the road while the helicopter went and took care of things.  If he had a question he would often come land right by our plant in a small lot and walk over to ask.  Last year we used two airtractors, so we were stuck at the airport (but hell, I didn't mind at all).  I would fill an aircraft up, get ready for the next one, and it would be there right away.  We got A LOT of acres done that morning.

It is a crop duster that has had hard points added.  It is an AgTractor.
