“ATTENTION: Captain to the bridge!”  I’m looking for two commodores and 8 ship captains for the upcoming Snapshot, “Form Battleline!” to take place on 15 September.  This event is loosely based on the battle cruiser actions the precipitated the Battle of Jutland back in 1916.  It is the first AH Snapshot that focuses on ship-to-ship, big gun surface action.  Hearken back to the days when the battleship was the queen of battle and aircraft merely the eyes of the fleet!  This event pits two cruiser squadrons against each other; each supported by motor-torpedo boats (PT’s) and a handful of scout planes (with no air-to-ground ordnance, but with defensive guns).

Each cruiser squadron will be made up of four or five “mini-fleets” (here after referred to as “sections” ;), each consisting of one cruiser and two destroyer escorts.  Each section will be required to stay within visual range of the squadron flagship.  The sections will be created by taking the cruiser fleets (3xCA, 4xDE) in the Philippine terrain and selectively sinking two CA’s and two DE’s (leaving a single CA and two DE’s).  The CM will then jump the sections into a line-abreast or line-astern formation (commodore’s choice), somewhere within approximately 25 miles of the enemy fleet.  Neither side will know the enemy squadron’s location, heading, or formation.  Each side will also have a CV fleet within one grid of their cruiser squadron.  Each side will be allowed a one-time launch of two to four scout planes (TBM’s for one side, IL-2 for the other).  These scout planes will not have air-to-ground ordnance or cannon (the IL-2’s will be required to fire all cannon rounds upon launch).  Once the scout planes have launched, the CV’s will be jumped at least 75 miles away, and will play no further part.  Each side will also be able to spawn a like number of PT boats in the first five minutes of the event, at which time PT’s will be disabled.  PT boat skippers and scout plane pilots will be free to any guns in the fleet (ship, PT, or scout planes) after their own PT is sunk or plane is shot down.

I need volunteers to command the individual ship sections, as well as a volunteer to act as commodore for each side (German High Seas Fleet = Knight, British Grand Fleet = Bishop).  Everyone else that shows up will be assigned to fly scout planes, drive PT’s, or man guns.  Everyone besides the commodores and section captains will get a PT or scout plane; once they lose it, they may man guns at will.  Victory will go to the side that does the best job of keeping their fleet together and concentrating their firepower.  Radar will be totally disabled, and the time of day will be sunrise.  Please post here if you wish to volunteer as a commodore (who will also captain the flagship section) or a ship captain (state your preference regarding which side you would like).

NOTE: If you plan to captain a section, please practice offline with the ship command interface.  It will be helpful (though not mandatory) that you be familiar with such terms as “line-abreast”, “line-astern”, “crossing the T”, etc.  Commodores and captains will of course be allowed to man the guns, if they so choose.  Commodores will have to be very clear when issuing maneuver commands to their captains, and should use a two-step command sequence.  By that, I mean you first issue a preparatory command, followed 20-30 seconds later by the word “Execute.”  Example: “90-degree left-flank turn to 090…<and 20 seconds later> Execute!”

S!

Am I to understand from this that you are able to construct Fleets which have no CV's present?  And that these fleets can have varying amounts of ships?  Are you able to tailor the numbers of cruisers etc.?

               Thanks Buzzbait

Sounds great Sabre.  :)

Buzzbait - Hostile Shores used fleets which were solely made up of cruisers and those destroyer things.

Buzz: The fleet composition is designed into the terrain.  Jihad's new Philippine terrain as almost two dozen fleets, ten of which are cruiser fleets (3XCA + 4XDE).  The CM tools allow the CM's (and anyone playing off-line) to selectively "sink" individual ships in a fleet using the "destroy objects" function in Set-up.  So long as you don't detonate the fleet flagship (Ship0), the fleet won't respawn back at port.

For this Snapshot, I wanted to make sure that sinking a single ship (the designated fleet flagship) wouldn't end the scenario. So I'm going to "build" cruiser squadrons that are make up of four or five cruiser mini-fleets, each of which will be composed of a single cruiser and two DE's (using the detonate command to create them out of the larger cruiser fleets).  It will then be up to each side to maneuver their squadron of mini-fleets together as a unit.  Hope that explains things.

Tone use to recreate ship to ship engagements that represented within the same time frame of Jutland.  Back in Warbirds he used b17s as ships with people maning the guns.  It took some imagination, but everyone had a blast.  He would go nuts to do the samething with a realistic terrain and actually use ships that were controlled.

This sounds like a lot of fun, to bad I have a golf tournament that day.

Good luck

Thankyou for your answer.

So my next question would be, if a terrain already exists with a certain type of TF or no TF's at all included, is it possible to create new TF's or change the existing type of TF to another relatively simply or is the only way to do it what you have mentioned, ie. 'sink' a component of the fleet?

The reason I ask is that I would like to see Cruiser fleets for a Mediterranean map but that map doesnt' have fleets in it yet.

Additionally, the 'Europe' map currently in the CT has CV task forces, which should probably be just Cruiser TF's.

The fleets must be designed and built into the terrain during production.  This is why I added the "have fun" comment in one of your earlier posts.

  :p

The editor isn't really hard to work with, it just requires you spend time learning to use it correctly.

Jihad is correct (of course...he's Mister Terrain-Man :)).  If I had the time to learn to use the editor, I'd take the ETO terrain and modify it to represent Jutland, or at least the Battle cruiser actions that took place back then.  By the way, I too warmly remember the WB re-inactments mentioned above...besides Jutland, I recall re-inacting Traffalgar, too.

One of the limitations in the current terrains is the number of fields allowed (correct me if I'm wrong, Jihad). Since all fleets have to have a port, this effectively limits the number of individually controlled naval units -- whether a fleet or a single ship -- you can place in a terrain (the fleets count towards the total number of bases too, I believe).  Another limitation is that an object must be available in the Terrain Editor's object library to be place in a terrain.  Unfortunately, objects cannot be created by us; only by HTC (again, corrrect me if I'm wrong).  So there's no telling how long it will be before HTC's art dept. can get around to building us some new ships...they're pretty busy as it is.

By the way, because it's beginning to look like we won't have the new Philippine terrain blessed by HTC in time for this first offering of "Form Battleline," we may have to go with a scaled down version. by that I mean, each side may have squadrons made up of only two mini-fleets (each with 2XCA + 4XDE) instead of four mini-fleets (with 1XCA+2XDE).  The overall number of cruisers and destoyers will be the same, but sinking a flagship will hurt twice as bad.  We'll just have to see.

Eskomo, can you take command of the British battlecruisers, please?  Also, I still need a CO for the German High Seas battlecruisers, and individual ship captains for the other ships.

<punt> Just a reminder.  Let Hblair (the CM) know when you come in to the SEA if you can skipper one of the ships, and if you want to be one of the two Commodores.

well, the terrorists have made it so I can participate in the event tomorrow, so unless something comes up, I'll man a gun or scout plane.   :)
