Like the other Corsairs, refrain from excessive use of vertical manuevers; unless you have plenty of E.

That's about 180 degrees off, IMO.
In other words,
you should be using the vertical as much as possible, especially when you're low on E. As a matter of fact, I'd recommend using the vertical unless you have so much E you can afford to just burn/give it away.
The one thing in the vertical I'd avoid if low on E would be roping. Don't try it, and don't try to follow one up.
