Caldwell County has joined with municipalities and other agencies to apply to become a test community for a new, super-fast Internet connectivity service being offered by Google. The company claims the service will offer Internet speeds 100 times faster than the speediest high-speed cable connections, with a target of one gigabit per second.

Representatives from Caldwell County government, area cities, Caldwell County Schools, Caldwell Community College and Technical Institute, Caldwell County Chamber of Commerce, Caldwell Memorial Hospital, Duke Energy, Caldwell 20/20, Blue Ridge Electric and others met last week to form a committee to proceed.

Called the Caldwell Google Fiber Experiment Task Force, the group will work together to present Caldwell County as the best location for the experimental project by the application deadline of March 26.

“If we are successful in becoming the test site, this Google experiment will provide broad-based, high-speed Internet service never seen before in a rural community,” Caldwell County Commissioner Don Barrier said. “This will give citizens access to the Internet at speeds they have never had before, Better still, it will allow our county to continue to transform itself for future employment and educational opportunities.

“The infrastructure that would be put in place to support this will allow current businesses opportunities to expand. That means existing businesses can become more competitive. And, it will provide fertile ground to attract new businesses and industry to the county. Either way this could mean more jobs coming to the area. It’s win-win situation for all.”

Google has established itself in Caldwell County for more than three years. The company operates a massive data center in Lenoir and owns a land footprint that extends from Harrisburg Drive to Fairview Drive. Last year, Google worked with the City of Lenoir to install wireless Internet service in the downtown area.

According to the application information on the Google Fiber for Communities Web site, Google will install fiber connections to homes and businesses throughout the chosen test sites for at least 50,000 and possibly up to 500,000 individuals. The company will then work with the current providers in the chosen area to offer the Internet service.

The Caldwell County task force will meet regularly over the next few weeks to present the county as the best location for the experiment,

“Caldwell County is uniquely positioned to take advantage of this opportunity because of our previous demonstrated ability to work well together with other local governments, entities and the private sector,” Caldwell County Manager Stan Kiser said. “This effort will take significant cooperation between all the local governments in the area, the education system and the utility providers. We are very excited about what this could mean for Caldwell County and the surrounding area.”

The US is so far behind the rest of the world in internet speed it's unreal.

The median U.S. download speed now is 1.97 megabits per second — a fraction of the 61 megabits per second enjoyed by consumers in Japan, says the report released Monday. Other speedy countries include South Korea (median 45 megabits), France (17 megabits) and Canada (7 megabits).

Sorry but thats a skewed report.

Yes, the average internet speed in the US may be lower than those in france and the UK but you forget US users, by default, get unlimited data usage while the great majority of those in the UK and France and other speedier nations do not.

I cannot tell you how much it sucked to be limited to a few gigabytes a MONTH.. something I was not used to even metering, to checking myself how much I used... and coming back to the US from New Zealand I started metering how much I used a day with what I normally use.. lo and behold I use more a DAY than I was allotted in the NZ data plans and at a very good avg speed (my connect is 15mbit cable but the avg DL speed is just under 1.2mbit). People I speak to online who are from France and the UK tell me they are metered to use about 5 gigabytes a month and thats by paying a higher tier of internet service... I use about 8 gigabytes a DAY if I watch a movie... or about 3 gigs a day just by normal online game/web browsing/software updating use.

With my 'poor' high speed service I can still watch movies real time streaming, play any and all mmo's... I really dont need more speed really.

Hudson, between Lenoir and Hickory.
I am from Boone, currently living in Columbia SC. I pass through there every few months.

Tac not all of those have limited service...

The difference in their high speed and ours is, while you can stream a movie online with no problem, they can stream a movie in HD

Streaming HD is not a big deal.  Consider this.  HD content can be streamed from as low as 3Mb/s.  Much like Netflix HD online content.  The generic "I can stream HD!" does not mean a thing.  Talk bit rates, not the type of content.

The U.S. telecommunications infrastructure is the largest in the world.  It will take time and a whole lot of money to upgrade.  Certainly more time and money than any other country in the world would have deal with.

A few years back, Google purchased up almost all the dark fiber in the U.S.  Google currently holds more dark fiber than any company in the world.  I have been wondering when they would start lighting it up.  They must have been waiting for thier own software infrastructure to be more complete before jumping into the Internet connection business.

Like Tac said I'd rather have a lower connection speed and have unlimited data usage then a higher connection speeds & be limited to my use.

Luckily my connection speed is higher then the average U.S user, I tend to get around 30/mps D/L & 10/mps U/L speeds, for me this is more then enough.

Here's my connection speeds, and according to the site my speeds are higher then the average of the top countries, the top countries are Korea at 23.16/mps D/L & Lithuania at 9.52/mps U/L.  The U.S is ranked 28th in D/L with 7.62 d/l & 29th in U/L with 1.75.

Korea is approximately the size of Kentucky in land area.  Considering the size of their economy, its no surprise at all they can wire that small of an area with the worlds fastest internet connections.  The US lags behind because of its size.
