Our Old Corvette Flipped.....
« on: February 28, 2010, 08:20:52 PM »
After a few scary runs and plenty of 700' trips down the 1/8 mile this car finally bit someone.....

On the lid!

(Fast forward to about one minute in.)

We could never get this car to ride and drive like it should, even at only 5.90's in the 1/8 mile. The Corvette was always a bipolar pain of the neck, great one pass, downright mean on others. My dad ended up selling it before one of us did exactly what you see in the is film. With only a 99" wheelbase it was never going to be a Cadillac but if ever a car was spooked this one was it.

Good god don't ask me about the wing, I cant believe it even got within a hundred feet of the car!

On the brighter side, our new dragster scored its first 4 second 1/8 mile pass Friday, 4.986 at 137.7 and a 4.998 at 136.7!

I run points at Sunshine Dragstrip in St. Petersburg, my brother does the same in Bradenton at Bradenton Motorsports Park.

My dad also runs the 1/8 mile in Lakeland, sometimes Orlando Speedworld and points at the new track in Orlando as well.

Two of those are 1/4 mile tracks only running 1/8 mile though....

You are in my back yard. I used to run my vettes (daily drivers/street cars)at Bradenton. I actually found a video of my old "PewterC5" (2000 6spd hard top) in action. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bEKpldWfKp4 this car eventually went 12.86@111 later in the night. My other vette 2002 Z06 went 12.07@116. I haven't taken the CTS-V out there yet. They are no where near as fast as your cars but fun none the less! Post a pic of your current car so i know what to look for next time i go to sunshine or Bradenton ( OSW is too far and Lakeland is horrible so I never go to those).

Yep, I live in Bradenton and grew up in St. Pete, from birth to about 15 I was within earshot of the drag strip.

The dragster can get quite hairy if you try to stay in it, otherwise its very easy to recover. Wednesday night we went to a test session, what a joke, rail couldn't even get down. I made the last time run that day, it over drove the front wheels and headed for the wall. I had 1/8 turn (only 2 lock to lock) into it and the car still pushed towards the wall, before the 60' cone. Sometimes I miss actually having to drive the car but it lets me focus on the race. The dragster on a good track might as well be on autopilot, zero input required as long as I can keep my foot in it. On a bad track, look out!

A neighbor had a stock vette of that vintage and body style...  Not sure if it was a special edition or not, but it had a LOT of power with the stock motor.  He said it was flat-out scary to drive over 100mph due to aero lift so even though it *should* have been able to push past 140mph, he simply didn't drive it fast.  He drove maybe 5 miles a month on average, and fired up the motor and ran it up to operating temperature once or twice a month.  He was a mechanic and loves cars, so I assume he was planning on keeping it garaged, extremely well maintained, and under 10k miles for a few decades in the hopes that it would become a big dollar collector item.  It was a beautiful car, just don't take it over 100.
Everyone I know, goes away, in the end.
