A simple, helpful request, minimal work, max return!!
« on: March 08, 2010, 05:10:22 PM »
How about setting up a gunnery range in the Training Arena for GVs?

A line in the dirt to position your tank, with range markers and various resetable moving targets, like a carnival shooting gallery?

Perhaps a hilltop range, shooting down in a valley (which we do quite often) at stationary targets, or even moving targets....

I've spent some time in the TA teaching gunnery to some players, and its amazing how many ppl just point and shoot.

I know I could use more practice.

Does the .DOT command, ".target" not work?

Could work. Could we have static tanks downrange, that re-up when exploded like in OFfline?

Never tried it in tanks. Figured it works for all items listed in the hangar.

I believe Ranger made a terrain that featured destructable objects that looked like gv's and lots of them. You may find it useful. I will see if I can locate it or you can PM usranger and see if he still has it.

edit: the terrain is in this thread    http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/index.php/topic,260657.0.html

The Training Arena does have stationary destructible respawning targets at the Vehicle Training area past the cities. They're hard to spot from the air, and they do tend to take a few rounds to put down, IIRC.

Actually its hard to do it in the TA as the damage is turned WAY down in there for training purposes.

That being said I have a mapmaker on the CM team working on it.
However it might end up being an offline map in order to get the damage to work out correctly.

We've done some testing, he can put the "hull" of a tank over a ammo bunker.
But then it dies very easy to HE, and very hard to AP.

Lots of testing and work still to be done on it, but the need was seen.
And we are trying to work on it.

Reading the OP, I don't think he's too concerned over AP vs. HE, just something for help learning how to shoot and range targets in a GV.
Ron White says you can't fix stupid. I beg to differ. Stupid will usually sort itself out, it's just a matter of making sure you're not close enough to become collateral damage.

Personally, I don't have any trouble hitting moving targets at 4000-5000 meters, but I've been helping out some newer players and squaddies who don't GV and it would be nice.

Typically, we just up in the TA, drive 3-4K away from each other and start shooting....it'd be nice to have a set of targets we could both shoot at to help explain ranging, deflections, and long range shooting especially.

Thanks for the input guys, and I'll be sure to DL that terrain and give it a try.
