P-51 Fuel Economy....
« on: March 06, 2010, 06:15:12 PM »
We started to hijack the other thread so I thought I would start another one.

Doing it right now. :)

And yes, I completely missed "normal power" in your post.  :o

Conducted a little test: Pony D, 50%fuel, FB 2.0. Takeoff to 10k, timer starts to run when starting engine.

With WEP: Time 3:34, fuel consumption 21gal
With MIL: Time 3:54, fuel consumption 19gal.
With normal: Time 5:44, fuel consumption 17gal.

If my math is right that equates out to be about.....

353 GPH at WEP
292 GPH at MIL
178 GPH at Normal

In a climb I will eat my words, the WEP setting is worth an average of about 1,100 feet per minute. Although as we can see it takes a high toll on your fuel reserves. The true test is level flight, here is where normal power really starts to shine. At 17k (P-51B) you will cruise at around 385-390, WEP will only net you around 420-425. The slick airframe really allows you to reduce power and maintain a very high speed. In fact the 109G6 will top out at 390 using WEP at its critical altitude of ~25k I believe..

Thoughts?

To really appreciate the P-51 you need to look at max cruise too.

Strip,

Remember that this is a question of maximum range.  Therefore, to test it out, you need to have a component after the climb that covers a certain distance.  Then, check the difference between total fuel consumed over that distance.

Try 1600 RPM and 30" of MP on the deck at 220mph TAS, and 1800 RPM and Full Throttle at 15,000 feet at 290mph TAS.

I like this sort of thinking testing and flying.
