Countin down the hours
« on: March 06, 2010, 01:23:47 PM »
On Monday at 11:30 I have to report to the hospital for surgery again. This will be the second one in 8 months. This time to repair a problem with a herniated disk between the L4 and L5. The disks on both sides of the L4 were bulged and gave me a problem on 06. This time the lower disk has fragmented and a chunk of it has dropped down right on top of the sciatic nerve. Lots of fun times dealing with that over the last 4 months when it really started banging on the pain meter. The doc is planning on a microdiscectomy. Small incision drill a small  :O hole in the vertebrae, move the nerve, collect the chunk(s) and trim the disk so it doesn't bulge any more. It's done as outpatient surgery now. The folks I've talked to that had the same thing have all aid the reduction in pain was nothing short of dramatic and most claim to be totally pain free. I hope I fit into that category as I want to do some more huntin and fishin with grankids.

Gettin old sux but it beats the alternative.  :old:

good luck, i had a major back injury lowest 3 verts (construction) its been 10 years and still have pain 24/7 level of pain is determined by how much activity i do, they wanted to do a level 3 fusion, wrap and pin my lower back 3 verts total with a 50/50 chance of any pain relief, i told them hell no those odds are not good enough for me, went thru the pain management classes things like that but ill tell ya it sucks to be in pain 24/7. the gave me a level 2 permanent partial disability, employers love hearing that when you apply for a job lol

this is caused, I hear, by constant to and fro movement of the spine, particularly in the lower areas.

I suggest in the future you refrain from such movements.

In spirit of this thread, we suggest posting pics of the wife. I suspect she's the culprit.

Fast recovery to you

The deed is done. It made for a long day yesterday but it's over anyhow. The pain in the hip and leg is virtually gone already. Some minor residual is left probably from the damage incurred by the disk fragments. The lower back is still sore but then it's been in almost constant spasm for months now. I figure it will take some time to relax and loosen the muscles up. No real big deal to the surgery other than the usual for me nausea reaction to anesthesia. A couple squirts in the IV bottle took care of that. So far today I'm feeling pretty good as long as I don't put pressure on the wound site. Thanks much for the prayers and well wishes. It was very much appreciated.

Looking forward to getting better and being able to do something other than sit around all day.
