How's the V-22 performing?

Anyone know how the V-22 is performing in Iraq/Afganistan? A few years ago that aircraft was all over the news, but lately nothing. I guess that means it's working ok. Did they ever arm it (other than hand-held stuff)? I seem to remember that they were going to add a rotary gun to it.

HAven't heard much about it...I know they worked out many kinks it had and I nthink it has been performing well...

Ill have to ask my mom about it. She works at a Marine base close by on the 46's, but has friends who work on the 22's.

I watched a documentary on Discovery (I think) a few weeks ago about V-22's in Afghanistan. From what they showed the Ospry has performed well as a rapid troop transport/resupply platform and the pilots love it. The only armament was a single .30 cal gun mounted on a swingarm at the tail ramp. I was surprised it wasn't more heavily gunned. I would think an M134 would be much more effective without much modification. One thing that really impressed me was the ability to direct the exhaust and rotor wash (unlike a helicopter) to create a clear LZ and a dust cloud cover for exiting troops and reduce FOD ingestion. Win/win.

A friend of mine sent me some of her pics from Iraq. She was stationed for a period at an airbase and I was surprised to see a very large number of Ospreys on the tarmac. I figure lots of birds means they've been doing well enough the Military keeps sending them in, or are expendable enough that the Military doesn't care, and my money is on the former.

I agree. It would be all over the news if they were crashing or shot down. The program has too many nay sayer's for that to go unnoticed. The Ospry seems to be doing everything Bell said it could do.
