Identify the two fighter pilots and the plane.
« on: February 15, 2001, 07:00:00 PM »
In this photo, we have two Navy fighter pilots who gained some recognition during the war. Name them, from left to right. For extra credit, identify the aircraft, but be specific as to make and model.

Err,

Henderson and O'Hare. That looks like and SBD in the backgroung or maybe a Helldiver. So I am trying to think of dive bomber pilots. Henderson was, O'hare wasn't.

Hmm, David Mcampbell??

The plane is probably a Grumman F4F-3A Wildcat.

Gonna guess FM-2, doubt it though because I believe these two jumped straight to F6F's when the navy converted.

FM Wildcat with Butch O'Hare (guessing, as you can't really see his face) and David McCampbell. I always thought they were F6F pilots, though.

<yawn>

Why are you SO into C.C. Jordan images?

O'Hare is one of them, the other isn't McCampbell. The fighter is a Wildcat, but not an FM.

Perhaps, you are staying up too late playing with flight sims?

Goes to show you how little time I spend on Navy birds.

Hmm, Thatch and McCampbell both have this 'Niven' thing going for them I guess? The shot I have of McCampbell standing in his F6F cockpit looks just like this guy (Thatch, I guess).

Nice to put a name with the handle, WideWing.

Widewing! You would be the guy to ask.   I've tried like hell to find info on these two pilots but I can't ever find all those records everyone talks about showing all the WWII pilots. Could you tell me where to look on the web or if it's possible to do on the web. They were both Marine Corps pilots one was Billy Hicks and the other is Bob Gier. I knew both of them. BTW when I last saw Bob he still had that mustache like the guy in the top photo. He just looked like the A-typical WWII fighter pilot.
