Book Idea
« on: March 07, 2010, 03:10:12 AM »
Hey all.

I am an amateur writer and I was thinking about writing my first book, now for a teenager with no money for publishing it I was thinking of just circulating it online or printing it off on A4 for my friends.

The story basically is that WW3 has broken out and a conventional war is raging in NATO and China. An airforce bomber crew does missions in the European theatre with a side character being a fighter pilot. While on leave in Britain the crew is assigned to the 8th Airforce nuclear warfare wing just as tensions reach a peak. GTNW starts and they drop the bomb. The world however saw the new X RAD bomb which releases a quickly dispersing Radiation cloud that kills everything organic and structures at the point of impact. This bomb is interspersed with regular fission weapons bringing armageddon on the earth.

But the X RAD bombs have been detonated over every major nation and the clouds spread over the earth but dissapate in an hour or so. But X RAD kills by rotting the cellibrium of the brain specifically the sensory and memory functions resulting in the worlds conversion from a Nuclear apocolypse to a ZOMBIE apocolypse.

So with this backdrop the book follows the experiences of the surviving main characters.

So what ya think?

I can't think of any reason why you shouldn't write it. It could be a great learning experience.

Writing is easy; good writing is hard. If you're truly interested in writing, I suggest you start by correcting all the tense, punctuation, capitalization and syntax errors in your post. Writing a story or book is different than writing emails or posts on a bulletin board. Readers won't read past the first paragraph if it's filled with errors.

Here are a couple of tips from writers who sell books:
- Good characters make a good story. Introduce them quickly and keep the story moving forward.
- Never use acronyms without explaining them.
- Show the story through dialog and don't "tell" the story.
- Something happens about 27 minutes into every movie. That "something" sets the story line and the challenges the characters face for the next hour or so. That same ratio works in books, too.

Do it!

I would seriously consider publishing it as an Ebook.

There are several sites out there that will let the author (You) upload a book set a price, anywhere from free up to 4-5$ a copy. They take a percentage off the top, you get the rest.

I would suggest you start by doing a bit of reading at www.mobileread.com
Great community there including several self published authors.

Go for it. Each attempt (regardless of success) gains you more experience. If you wish to pursue writing of any form, I would certainly pounce on ideas such as your's.

First bit.

This is the first bit I have got so far. Dont worry, I am not going to clog the BB's with the whole book, just progress.

I used a combination of my own style of writing with the best and most helpful features of both W.E Johns and Dale Brown (My Heroes).

Russian Federation Embassy Paris – 6:38 AM June 8th 2016

The hallway in the embassy clattered with footsteps, the highly polished floorboards creaking with the weight of the ambassadors from NATO. Generals and diplomats from France, Britain and the United States power walked towards the office of the Russian ambassador their shoes shining under the embassy lights. They reached the door in seconds and pushed the double oak doors open with a vengeance, the Russian ambassador Yuri Vologda Stefanovic stood up as the party reached his desk. “Gentlemen, I have nothing more to say to you other than that the President AND the Prime Minister have made up their minds. We will not allow the Ukraine OR Georgia to join NATO, their trade and co-operation in Eastern European matters is essential for Russia’s well being. And joining NATO would involve complete separation. So the answer is no”.

“Mr. Ambassador” spoke out the British Ambassador. “They have applied and we have accepted, a universal vote was taken and they were welcomed. They wish to have their say in GLOBAL affairs and neither you nor we have the right to deny them that”. “On the contrary we do, for the reasons in which we have already mentioned they must not join NATO and we have taken steps to ensure this” replied the Russian coolly. It was now the turn of the American who was in no way amused. “You invaded them and subdued them, and not only that you have SEVEN!!! Fully equipped armies along the border of Poland and Czechoslovakia. This could only be described as a declaration of war!” Again Yuri replied coolly “If it is war that NATO wishes then you shall receive it gentlemen in large quantity, that you can be sure and I am sure the United States will be relieved. But Russia will not be moved on this topic and that is final”. The silence that fell across the room was eerie, each man knew what the continuation of this meeting would lead to should a resolution fail to materialize. The bookcases and statues lining the walls spoke of the yesteryear, the days where Soviet pomp and power had long since disappeared but their legacy lived on in the Paris embassy. This atmosphere gave the NATO ambassadors an uneasy feeling. Finally the silence was broken by the American General “Mr. Ambassador, I am sure you realize what a war would entail”, “I am fully aware G.I Joe” came the sneer of a reply. The Americans face turned scarlet with mortification and anger at Yuri’s apparent contempt for him ‘so this Ruski piece of toejam thinks he can screw me around, well I will show him’ he thought. “Mr. Ambassador you are declaring war on the United States, a country that has NEVER lost a war in its entire history. It would be wise for you to contemplate your position” grated the American

I was taught to separate thoughts and speech away from the main blob of text. Just my 2 cents, you might want to consider doing something similar to the above ^

My opinion is; if you ask for opinions on this, this poor guy's thread is gonna end up hijacked and locked. Let it go.

I'm not asking for opinions, I am stating that those "facts" are simply opinions.

Letting it go.
