Has anyone noticed that the Ki-61 I guns are reversed?
« on: October 14, 2001, 03:32:00 PM »
I was flying a Ki-61I the other nite and noticed that the guns are switched.  When the 20mm are fired, the cowl guns flash and when the 12.7 mm guns are fired the wing guns flash.  This is opposite of what it should be.  My primary source for determining that this setup is incorrect is by Mikesh, Robert C.  Japanese Aircraft Interiors 1940-1945, Monogram Aviation Publishers, Sturbridge MA, 2000 pps 40-46.  Hopefully HTC can correct this very minor error whenever they see fit.  Not really annoying but noticable.

Here's a link to a couple of photos from the book.  I hope it works and excuse the Fw190D-9 photos, I also build models.

well, the link doesn't seem to work...I'm not real good with internet stuff.  anyway, if you'd like to see some pictures of  the nose guns on the Ki, visit my site at http://home.stny.rr.com/tclark1/

You're wrong.

The Ki-61-KAIc in AH correctly has Ho-5 cannons in the fuselage and 12.7 MM machine guns in the wings.  Lethal  :)

You are looking at an earlier Ki-61-Ia or Ib that had German MG 151 cannons in the wings and 12.7 MM machine guns in the fuselage.

I don't have a reference for it.  Could someone give me a title, author and publisher so I might find out for myself?  The only reference I have lists the -I and the -III which doesn't have any cowl guns at all.

EDO to attach an image, put your image file up in some webspace, then when writing your message for the bbs, click the Instant UBB Code button marked IMAGE and then paste the URL of the image including the filename.

The first 20 mm armed Ki-61s used the German MG 151 which was wing mounted, with the 12.7 mm guns in the cowl.  But when Ho-5 were used they were cowl mounted as in AH.
