it looks like a normal PW derby ride w/ 4 wheel and all. You just raise one of 'em up so it won't touch the track.
Then you gota mess w/ the other 3 wheels and get the angle just right for it to go straight.
Kinda a huge pain but the end result is 1/4 less friction and only other 3 wheel cars can beat you.

I built 3 dies for him.
1 to true the axle
1 @ 1/2 degree to raise the non-dominant front wheel off the track
1 @ 2 degrees to angle the rear axles so the wheels ride on the head of the nail and not the body of the car
Just put the axle in between the 2 halves of the die and whack it with a hammer
