BOYS AND GIRLS ........ i do believe this thread has been HIJACKED

i too was a boy with a pine wood derby toy!     i made it to district   and lost my ass!

Dad had the buddy who had the belt saw and sander.   Then we gouged it out  and melted some LEDFORD(lead) in to it.   dont forget the graphite on the wheels!

ahhh the good old days!   but this needs to be a seperate thread

My pine wood derby car would have smoked yours buddy...yeah!!!

Y'all have not reached the 'elite' stage of pinewood derby creation until you design a car where only 3 wheels are used.

The key is friction in a pinewood so if you eliminate one wheel from touching you just eliminated 1/4 of the friction.

Took me the better part of a month to figure out how to get the wheel alignment "perfect" on my sons car.

He beat all comers w/ that ride.  No race was even close.

If you had asked him he would tell you he did almost all the work on the car.

The reality is he spent maybe 4 hours on it to my 40.  (but I never let him know that)

lol no..

it looks like a normal PW derby ride w/ 4 wheel and all.   You just raise one of 'em up so it won't touch the track.

Then you gota mess w/ the other 3 wheels and get the angle just right for it to go straight.

Kinda a huge pain but the end result is 1/4 less friction and only other 3 wheel cars can beat you.

<--- Tool & Diemaker in a former life   :D

I built 3 dies for him.

1 to true the axle

1 @ 1/2 degree to raise the non-dominant front wheel off the track

1 @ 2 degrees to angle the rear axles so the wheels ride on the head of the nail and not the body of the car

Just put the axle in between the 2 halves of the die and whack it with a hammer  :aok
