Bomber Bomb Damage

If an internal or external bomb were to take a hit, should this be another form of damage (i.e. bombs either explode or fail to release)?

A bomb taking a round most likely would still drop.
Very likely the round wouldn't penetrate. If it did penetrate, it might burn, blowing back out the penetration hole like a blowtorch,  but chances are it wouldn't explode.

Possibly this could be a low % chance on fail to release, or a slightly higher % of fail to arm and explode on impact.

Why not at least add the bomb bay doors to possible damage?   at the very least have them get blown off and it will slow the bombers down a bit like having them open or something?     If you prevent the bombs from dropping or not exploding you will never hear the end of it. It takes far to long to climb out just to have your doors fail or bombs be duds.

Just a thought I wouldn't mind more parts to fly off of my buffs. :D

I like Flayed's ideas. It would be cool to see large sections of the bombers fuselage torn off and missing bomb bay doors.

Athough, I would still like to see damage that prevented the bombs from dropping. If I could hit the plane in the right spot and prevent it from delivering its load rather than having to destroy the plane completely, I might have a more realistic chance of defending my base or a cv. I know this would create a bunch of whines, but may force bomber formations to fly as they did in WWII, a lot higher and level. By allowing damage of the bombs and/or bomb bay racks may discourage suicide dive bomb attack runs of bomber formations into targets, which probably didn’t happen too often in WWII. I believe a Wishlist thread, a few months ago, did ask to prevent steep dive bomb attacks for bombers as that may have been impossible in real life.

Oh wait a minute, while I'm on the subject, I would like to add another possible bomber damage item. Back in WWII, my great-uncle was riding in one of the returning B-24's from the Ploesti mission 1 Aug 43, aka Dogpatch Raiders, with shot-up flight cables around his wrists. So adding shot-up flight controls may be a consideration (not really, I just wanted to brag :neener:).

I won't say his name, but my great-uncle's picture along with his flight crew can be found on this link:

Are there any stats on how many ords that exploded from a enemy fighter round or flack?

I believe a 262 (or 163, cant remember) armed with rockets was able to destroy about 10 b17's with one rocket salvo.  Did it by firing at the moment the b17's were at their weakest, when the bay doors were open and bombs were armed.  he hit the first b17 that blew up, the explosion hit the b17s next to it that blew up and they destroyed more...btw the guy didnt get to land his kills. fiter escorts were able to shoot him down while returning to base.  i remember reading about it from a book by one of the fiter pilots who witnessed it. cant remember the source, it was a few years back.

A single .30 cal rifle round (not even AP or API) can penetrated relatively thick rear pilot armor on BOB-era planes. 50cal and 20mm quite easily so. So, thinking that you can't harm metal-encased bombs is inaccurate. These are not hardened steel armored casings. They are thin metal that is the minimum allowed to support the weight of the bomb inside it.

Sailors on ships used to take out garand rifles and shoot through the thick metal casing on floating mines to blow them up. I recall at least a few times where I've read comments about night fighters targeting bomb bays and being in danger themselves if/when they detonated the unstable high explosives inside.

If you do a search you will find it has been asked for in the past. I'd still like to see it as part of the immersion of the game. By the same token, I would want to be able to set DTs on fire, bombs and rockets under fighter/bomber wings as well. To have exploding bomber bombays but not underwing ord is a bit of a double standard.
