190 ballistics question
« on: April 01, 2010, 11:11:50 PM »
ive heard some very horrible storries about the ballistics of the 30mm cannon on the 109-k4, and i was wondering if thats the same for the 30mm on the a8. also, what are ballistics like for the 20mm's on the f8? what are some good tactics for drawing lead in these planes?

It's the same 30mm cannon, the MK 108

German cannons in AH2:

20mm: MG-FF: Bf 109E, BF 110C, outer wing cannons in FW 109A-5 (slow velocity gun with relatively bad ballistics)
20mm: MG 151/20: inner wing cannons FW 190A-5, and all other fighters
30mm MK-108

And a good tactice for drawing lead? Basically same in other planes: Practice, and preferably shoot at short ranges.

When using the 30mm's, I've heard that you should lead about twice as much as you would with, say, the 20mm's on spitties and other aircraft.

If you're level, it's not as much a problem as you might think. Assuming your convergence is all set the same, they'll all get to the same place (just not at the same time). If you're pulling lead and making Gs it's a big issue. They'll drop significantly. MGFF less than 30mm, but still significantly.

The inboard MG151/20s on all 190s are decent. They are not hispanos, and depending on what other planes you normally fly, you will need to lead 2x your normal distance (or more, depending on situation). These guns are quite common in AH, found on almost all 109s, all 190s, the 110G, the ar234,the C205, and some similar weapons that may or may not be based on the MG151/20 on some Japanese planes.

No Japanese gun was based on the MG151/20.  Some Ki-61-Is carried MG151/20s, but not the version we have.  The Type 99 Model 1 and Type 99 Model 2 were based on the same Oerlikon 20mm than the MG/FF was based on.  The Ho-5 of the IJA was based on the Browning .50 caliber, as was the 12.7mm Ho-103.  That said, the Type 99 Model 2 and Ho-5 do have somewhat similar ballistics to the MG151/20.

off load your Gs when firing if you can, the German rides have the worst ballistics in the game, most of my kills I can not see my target and experiment with your convergence, I use 400 sometimes 500.

With the exception of the MG/FF I disagree.  I have a lot more trouble with the 20mm ShVAK's on the Russian planes than I do with the MG/151 or even the Mk 108.
I edit a lot of my posts.  Get used to it.

i agree, the ShVAK's are by far the worst 20's in the game.

thanks for the help, guys <S>

No, they are significantly weaker.

Wildcat,

If you want to check the ballistics of the different guns try the TA and turn on the lead calculating gunsite!

This is done by pressing ctrl and tab then you tab a target plane, you will see a set of crosshairs that show the amount of lead you require to hit the target at that distance and angle. you can use this to develope a sight picture(mental image) of the amount of lead you need.

ballistics is an optimistic term in regards to the german cannons ...

tactics that i recommend is to shove cannon up nme's tailpipe and pull trigger ...
