New Map Feature: Enemy Movement Channel and Icons
« on: April 01, 2010, 12:22:28 PM »
Things get cluttered on the country channel with everyone screaming out enemy movements such as CV positions, bomber raids, and Base captures. I think it would be great to have another option in the clipboard to give a detailed report on any mass enemy sightings, such as a CV or mission groups.

On the map, you could be able to plant an icon: CV, bomber formation, GV or attack planes that would illustrate what you saw and wish to inform your country. Then, you would draw an arrow similar to plotting the course of a CV that you think is the likely course the enemy is moving. Clicking on the icon itself would give more detailed information such as altitude, vehicle type, estimated speed, and time of initial sighting.

For everyone else in the country, by right clicking on the map and choosing from the drop down menu the option of "show enemy icons" it will then show all of the most recent map icons as well as a logbook that contained a list of all enemy sightings. The icon would disappear after a certain amount of time (say 30 minutes) as the sighting would be old.

I think this would work out great to take the burden off of the country channel as the enemy movement news source because the text just disappears far too fast and gets clouded with other comments. This system will work great for recon purposes because the player who spotted the movement could pin the appropriate icon on the map as well as make a quick description of the enemy force. This would then stay available long enough for the country to see and deal with the threat effectively.

You mean by some idiot who posts the same sighting 20 times in a row? Yeah, abuse from immature players is possible, but think of the teamwork it would inspire for players to spot the enemy and rally their teammates.
Could limit it to 1 sighting post per 30 minutes or unless the player deletes the his/her previous post.

or just enable it for squadron and mission groups, so you can plot the mission waypoints etc on the map and only your squad or mission can see it

Hi,

Your idea is interesting but I must disagree about implementing it into AH. This is a game/sim that simulates WW2 era, and we already have too many "navigational aids" built-in to enhance gameplay. Using the voice or text buffer, is the right way to simulate WW2 communications and command line. Cluttered, confused, garbled, chaotic. Not a AWACS controlled environment. Not organized, not with real-time sattelite video feed. Only place where WW2 combat was so clean was in the Headquarters. And they relied on radio, telephones and telegraphs...

Commanders in the HQ's had huge wall or table maps that would have had small figures that were placed on the map to represent both friendly and estimated enemy forces. Enemy positions and strength's were estimated from recon units or from information sent from the frontlines. How would this be any different from my OP?

I'm not saying that enemy positions should be constantly updated or fixed to nearest foot on a map. That would be like using satellites in the modern era. An example of what I had in mind would be that someone views the map and sees that there were enemy bomber formations sighted in sector 10.26.4 heading NW at an altitude of 20k 16 minutes ago. That player could then decide wether or not he/she is interested in going after the enemy by themselves or organize a counter mission to deal with the bombers

Why not take out the possibility of abuse and make it automatic; i.e. if a friendly plane gets within sight distance of an enemy CV then a ghosted icon shows up on the map of that CVs last known position and heading for some set period?  Same for enemy planes, if a friendly "sees" them (i.e. they are within icon range) outside of radar coverage they show up on the map until no friendly can see them anymore?  This could add "photo recon" type missions to the list of possible things to do.
