disabling 2nd core in notebook: run cooler? save battery?
« on: March 30, 2010, 11:52:23 AM »
I've got a notebook with a core2duo. I was wondering if disabling the 2nd core would lengthen battery time?

Right now its running on 1 core on AC and it seems to run the same temp as with both cores. Does disabling the core actually turn it off? Or, just keep the OS from seeing it?

It responds to the load, light load is lower temps and power regardless of how many cores are enabled. Best to leave it alone. The main difference will be that it won't respond as well when you need it to work harder.

On other CPUs it might be a factor (though I'm not sure), but on those mobile C2Ds, they run so cool and on such low power anyways that I can't imagine any noticable savings.
