I have seen alot of snakes in my life but never one do that myself, the old wise tale of snakes biting underwater just went out the window too!   :old:

Not sure what it is though, looks alot like a Canebrake/Timber Rattler.  Not so sure about it being a copperhead.

Twizzty, I notice your from Florida, did you see this snake in Florida? If so, the one you seen looks similar to the species that is from Florida and it would be a Canebrake.

I kinda thought it was something else too at first, like a cotton mouth, but look closely at the markings.

Copperhead

Cottonmouth

Canebrake

Obviously the shape of the head suggests a viper of some sort. Compare the body markings and the thickness at the neck.

Actually it was on a trip to NC, Lake Lure to be exact. We ride in NC a couple of times a year and we fish whenever the weather/traffic gets bad. On almost every trip since we've make it back to that bank and tossed in a line. You never know...

...and definitely no rattle, pointy tail for sure.

This is interesting.
I think we are both wrong, I am surprised to find something out about a snake that I have never seen before, but its called a Northern Water snake.  In your pic the snake looks too long and not having the inverted "Y" colors to be a copperhead, I searched NC fish eating snakes and this is what came up.

Similar but trying to find another good pic.

Best one I could find.....

This snake sure looks mean, cant say that I ever seen a snake eat a Catfish like that, you would think the cats fins would stick him going down his throat.  Either way, I wont mess with it.  Thanks for the pics.

I live 9 miles down the road from Lake Lure on Lake Adger.  My guess is thats your basic water snake around here!  that one does look a little big but its hard to tell size and preportions.  I'll have to show that my my game warden buddy and see what he thinks it is.

Wow, I believe you are correct Dads...never seen that snake before and I probably would have killed it thinking it was a copper head. Nice find.

Yeah no kidding, I showed some guys at work some pics and the first thing they thought as well was a Copper Head.
They are so similar in color and pattern that I don't think I would be able to spend the few seconds it would take during my sheer terror tantrum to identify it before I killed it. :lol

Now that I have never seen before...just judging from the markings and the coloration on its head that snake is a copperhead. Never heard of one killing a fish before...frogs and such yes.

Yeah, prolly a copperhead.  Had a few run-ins with those before, but I never knew they liked sushi.  Looking at the head, I don't think it's a water snake.  It's got a wider head and thinner "neck" like the copper.  I've never seen a NWS up close before to really compare though...  Cool pics!

I've never seen a Copperhead or Rattler go underwater like that. Vipers will bite their prey and wait for then to die before going after them. I think it's a water snake.

It very well could be, The jaw line looks like a venomous snake though.   NWS aren't venomous, so that's why I ruled that one out.  Also, copperheads can swim remarkably well, and can constrict to kill prey (after they bite it that is).
