Axis Cluster Bombs
« on: October 28, 2001, 05:44:00 PM »
The Germans and Japanese both fielded cluster bombs, the came in various sizes both in terms of number of bombs carried and the size of those bombs.Bellow are some examples of anti personal and anti armor bombs for use in cluster bombs, as well as two types of cluster bombs theamselves.
Do we want this type of weapon? it would be fun to dive in and drop one in the general direction of an osty and shower the area with AP bomblets, or to come in in the Ki 67 and do the same thing. I am thinking it would be kinda easy to kill GV's with this weapon. All German aircraft types we have curentaly were capable of carying this type of weapon( I beleave), as for the Japanese, I am certain the Ki 67 could, but am a little uncertain as to wheather the Japanese Ftr's we have could or did so operationaly.

The Il-2M was also used to drop cluster munitions.

near misses with a 250kg at times dont kill gvs. My only concern would be how effectively they can be modelled compare to what seems like a limited blast area.

Bar that bring umm on.

Ok I know how you guys "hate" or "don't like" IL-2 but here is what I have seen in that demo/beta.

They have cluster munitions modeled and the cluster bombs are very effective when making a flak suppression run or even against a soft target like transports vehicles. When you make a run in with 2-4 IL-2s carrying that load on an airfield or village with heavy flak you can wipe it out in the first pass for the most part.

Those would most likely be the same type of target we could attack with them in AH even with a limited blast radius it would be a nice option. Also you could effectively cover a VH spawn area or hangar with them and probably do a nice job there.

Hear is the next "?"....

If we did get theam how would we load tham?Say you want to up your JU 88, Ki 67, FW 190. Could we take a mixed load? Cluster bombs outboard and GP bombs inboard...ect, the posabalities might tax the curent system of ordance selection.Hight would be a factor to, the heigher you drop theam the larger the blast area, type of Cluster muniton would be a factor too would we have a generic type for all countries or would their different balastic natures be modeled, for example would we see the German butterfly bomb deploy out of the container and sorta float down? What would it look like Cool no doubt. Would we have AT and AP cluster bomb options? AP better for flak and efective aganst OT armor, AP for Armor and less efective for flack or a generic type?

Sssssh!  Didn't you know Sancho that only the Axis had the good weapons.  The Allies only had spitballs and slingshots.

Hi Sancho,

>Allies had cluster bombs too. And Napalm.

These incendiary bombs from the above list released a liquid incendiary similar to Napalm:

Inc   Flam C250, Flam C500

What about mines?

Didn't the Ju88 undertake mine laying operations?

I'm not sure what use we could put to an anti personel cluster bomb, but mine laying would be relevant in the MA.

Kill scoring may be a bit complex though.

S!

Seeker has a very good idea.  A number of aircraft types could lay mines.  This would be an interesting option.  An aircraft could lay mines ahead of an approaching Task Force.

Woe to any TF not being manned!

Perhaps they'd have to give a Bridge or Con position which would give a better forward view for spotting such devilish apparatus.

All the major combatants in WW2 fielded cluster bombs.  They would be fun if there was an appropriate explosion animation.
