From what I understand the 105 wasn't really that effective of an anti-tank weapon. It mainly turned the Sherman into self-propelled artillery. Although maybe that IS why people want it....
Ron White says you can't fix stupid. I beg to differ. Stupid will usually sort itself out, it's just a matter of making sure you're not close enough to become collateral damage.

Those tanks did not have the HEAT round in WWII, and that is not the same M-68 105mm main gun that is on the M-48A5's, M-60's model and M1-IP models.

Quite a few tanks and field guns in WWII had HEAT rounds -- including the 105mm armed Sherman.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/High_explosive_anti-tank_warhead

A note about their introduction:
Quote
In mid-1940 Germany introduced the first HEAT round to be fired by a gun, the 7.5 cm Gr. 38 fired by the 7.5 cm Kw.K. of the Panzer IV tank and the Stug-III self propelled gun. In mid-1941 the first HEAT rifle-grenade (issued to paratroopers) and the improved 7.5 cm Gr. 38 Hl/A design followed. In 1942 Germany started the production of HEAT rifle-grenades for regular army units and introduced another improved design, the Gr. 38 Hl/B. In 1943 finally the Püppchen, Panzerfaust and Panzerschreck were introduced together with the design of the Gr. 38 HL/C.

Scroll down a bit on this link and find a note where it is quoting
"U.S. Army Test No.2
Firing Tests conducted 12-30 July 1944 by 1st U.S. Army in Normandy.
REPORT OF PROCEEDINGS OF BOARD OF OFFICERS"

http://www.ww2aircraft.net/forum/ww2-general/pzkpfw-v-panther-its-variants-14571-9.html

My search for the original document has failed in the time my limited patience has allotted, but here is the relevant part of the report . . .
Quote
9) 105mm Howitzer, M4, mounted on Medium Tank, M4
HEAT M67 will penetrate front glacis slope plate and gun mantlet at 500 yards (see assumption made in paragraph 1c).

I read nothing in your wiki link that indicates the sherman 105 of WWII carried heat rounds???? As far as I am aware the sherman 105 was an infantry support tank, utilized for taking out bunkers and MG pillboxes, some later varients also carried a flame thrower I think.

See my latest modification above.  Do your own search for the M67 HEAT round used with the US 105mm howitzers.  I'm going to bed.   :aok

The 105mm Sherman was not meant to shoot other tanks.  It was used by HQ companies to provide indirect and direct fire support.  Same 105mm Howitzer as on the M7 Priest.  In tank units the M7 was considered too vulnerable due to the open top so the 105 Sherman was used instead.

I kind of think we ought to wait til we get these two new Shermans before we start asking for more though.  Seems like the 76mm gunned Sherman might do quite well.  And the early 75mm gunned Sherman sure opens the door for more scenario options in particular if we get some other German armor to go with it.  The skinners ought to have a great time with all the options for paint schemes on the 75mm gunned Sherman, in particular if HTC allows M4, M4A2 and M4A4 variants to be skinned on the M4A3 so that both US and other Allied Shermans can be done.

Since we're getting the M4A3 75mm I'd actually love to see a small PnzrIII added now before the M-18 :aok

Great, more tanks... they do look fantastic though.

Kazaa can you believe over the past 2 weeks I've become addicted to tanks.  For the first 14 months I never set foot in a tank now look  :rofl

I got 54 hours just in tanks this tour crazy.
