Well, even then a circle runner would hit at an oblique angle (if it didn't detonate via magnetic influence) and would be likely to go off. :)

Steelhead and Tinosa was what sparked my interest in US subs and torpedo devlopment. after i read an account of both ships firing a total of 20 torps between them into the tanker Kazahaya(sp?) before it sank. can say that it was in spite of ,rather then because of, the quality of the weapons with which the US submarines were armed that they achieved their great success. i got respect for submariners, but could never be one.

Just wondering if there's anything to this, or if it's just "History Channel Strikes Again"?

Krusty, check out the Nihon Kaigun web site.  It's run by the two guys who recently wrote "Shattered Sword", a book all about the Battle of Midway.  Their page on torpedoes has lots of data.  For example, they say the airborne Type 91 model 2 carried by the B5N "Kate" bombers at Pearl Harbor ran for 2,000 meters at 41 knots, and could be dropped at speeds up to 260 knots (~ 286 MPH).

Also, "Clash of the Carriers" by Barrett Tillman has a very detailed description of the IJN torpedoes.

I'll Check that out, always in need of good naval books. Most of mine are the vintage type such as Jane's Ships of World War II and Signal/Squadron books.
