Best Settings for GeForce 9500GT Video Card?
« on: April 30, 2010, 05:48:45 PM »
I just installed a GeFord 9500GT Video Card (1 GB onboard RAM). The performance is okay, but I am wondering if there is anything I can do to improve it (boost frame rates, etc). Not sure of the best settings for antialiasing, anistropic, V-sync and so on.

I'd like to be able to run "Detailed Terrain" and "Detailed Water" at the best frame rates it can achieve. Right now I am getting about 60 fps, but in a crowded scene with several aircraft icons visible, it drops into the 30s. AH textures are set at 1024 and my screen resolution is 1440 X 900.

You may want to throw in your processor info or even a DXdiag so it gives a better idea as the processor and system information is important too.  You could have the best video card money can buy, but if your system can't support it good enough... :salute

Believe it or not, the 9500,while better than most, still isn't THAT great of a card.  I have a feeling 1024 textures may be pushing it just a bit too much.

Make sure AA and V-sync are set up in your NVidia control panel to "application controlled" and then in the Video Settings of AH (on the first screen before you logon) make sure the AA slider is all the way to the LEFT (off) and make sure V-Sync is turned ON.  You can turn it off for testing purposes, but Aces High likes it to be on to prevent screen tearing and rubber bullets...

If you insist on using 1024 textures, you HAVE to download the Hi-Res Texture pack from here and install it, otherwise you're really only running 512 textures, even if it says 1024.  Also make sure self shadows (and other aircrafts' shadows) are turned off.  You can also adjust the detailed terrain and distance sliders from the video setting after logging on down a bit... this will actually help quite a bit.

If you've already done all of this, then try setting it to 512 textures and just play if for a bit... see if your framerates improve in a crowd.  Your other hardware isn't quite 'state-of-the-art'.  This isn't even a multi-core cpu.  Add in a relatively low amount of RAM (probably slow ram at that) and a not-so-great video card, and I have a feeling you're just expecting a little too much out of your system to run nearly full-boat settings like this.

Thanks much, Tigger. Mine is an "old" system as such things go. It is great for everything else I do, but not ideal for Aces High.

I'll give your suggestions a try.

Believe me... I know.  It's a very capable system as long as you stay away from games and autocad.

Fortunately Aces High is scalable.. you can get it to work well on older systems and you can also get it to just about crash state-of-the-art systems.  1024 Hi-Res textures require a lot of video, memory, and processing power to run smoothly so don't expect to be able to do so smoothly with your system.
