I did not know they are broke.  Do you really know how the gov allocated money?  It is a lot more complex then you think/.

i know it's complex. but we constantly read that the british govt. is in about the same shape as our own, moneywise. they're cutting things here and there to make ends meet, and then they spend crazy money to build this.
it's not my business, as i don't live there, i was simply making an observation.

I think it is an absurd amount of money that could restore the entire RAF WW2 planeset back to flying condition!

The key words are private investment,  people looking to make a return on an investment in the museum shop / cafe from the thousands of visitors per year.  Call me a cynic but I just hate the idea that some suit is going to be using The Few as a money making venture.

I'm all for remembering what The Few achieved (I made an entire squadron based on them   :) )   But for me it is hearing those Spits, Hurricanes, lancs  (no mossies / beaufighter  :()  beating up the skies over Duxford on a sunny July afternoon.   That is History brought back to life  :D  Not hanging from some ceiling in a fancy museum.
+1
those aircraft belong in the air, not with a stick stuck up their arses and stuck in/on a building.

That is bad!  I did not hear but when will they start the project?

Bruv119 is mostly right, "private investment" a bunch of suits that most likely don't care much about the historic part of BoB.

Interesting concept and it looks pretty good. After time passes all of the flying examples will either be retired or gone in crashes eventually. At least some will be displayed in a flying format. There is no really good solution to the loss of flying WW2 aircraft but this is better than scrapping or loss in operation.
DEFINITION OF A VETERAN
A Veteran - whether active duty, retired, national guard or reserve - is someone who, at one point in their life, wrote a check made payable to "The United States of America", for an amount of "up to and including my life."

I would have thought It was prudent and indeed cost effective to have repro's as static displays. As much as I love seeing airshows and hearing the drone of the engines, having an interactive museum is going to reach more people and keep the era alive much longer imho.

Why London though? It really gets me wound up when everything HAS to be there. If this is for everyone, then why not more centrally placed?

Seems like a fitting place to me.

so......they're broke, and they feel the need to put up this? :noid

Many projects startout like this.  They need something ambitious and attractive to go out and show potential donors.  Always aim high, if they get anywhere close to the money needed, the VEs (Value Engineers - aka penny pinchers - aka the bane to any designer's vision) will make/find a way to get it built within the budget.... and sometimes you just get lucky.  Never know till ya try, maybe Bill Gates is a closet-BoB fanatic, pops up outa left field with a blank check and in less than 3 years we'll be reserving tickets to go visit the Gates Battle of Britain Beacon.

Ah, but relax my friend, this is again as I said an endevour to raise money for them through private investors.  What are the odds that they'll get exactly the money needed for this project?  Not good, honestly.  On the plus side though, the odds of them getting the exact ammount are equal if not less than them actually raising slightly more than the money needed (so there's leftovers to go into other areas of the museum).  Most likely though they won't get anywhere close... BUT!... lets say worse case scenario, they waise 10-20% of the funds.  Thats still enough to pay for the design of this project pluss whatever is leftover gets redistributed to other areas of the museum.  That's the great thing about this, even if it never gets built or comes close, it will raise some funds and awareness for the museum.

You know the English want to build a manmade island in the middle of the channel for the sheer purpose of a WWII memorial.   :D

No, i did not know that.  But why there, most of the fighting occur over mainland England.  If you are talking about BoB.  Now to represent BoB, Battle of the Atlantic and Baltic Sea, Normandy, France and Dunkirk, yes that would be fitting.

Yes he would... he would know that the bombing of England was not limited to London, ask the people of Coventry. Most of the airfields that held fighter units were not in London, if you were to say the south of England it would be closer to the truth. The main reason is because the RAF BoB Museum at Hendon is already situated and known in the aviation community., the other being that is probably were most sponsorship will come from.
So, like minke said "why London?"

Why do we have The National World War II Museum in New Orleans?  I know the reason and there is something in London that is significant to BoB.
