AH lock up and texture issue.
« on: May 31, 2010, 12:39:04 PM »
Every now and then my PC will lock up for 10 seconds or so when playing AH. After it unfreezes the game plays normally except some of the textures in the game are attached to the wrong objects as in the screenshot below. Here you can see the cloud textures have been replaced by instrument and rock textures and the clipboard is partially transparent with a grass texture below the map. It happens most often when I enter an arena or if I am changing views quickly. If I alt-tab out of the game the textures revert to their correct assignments.

This problem has been with me for the last couple of AH versions. I recall I had texture swapping in the last AH beta too, but without the freezes. IIRC this was a beta bug. I've only had this occur in AH but then I don't run any other 3D game that is as taxing to the video card.

To date I have tried three different video drivers, cleaning the old ones out properly each time. I have also used Evga's Precision utility to monitor GPU temperatures and to set the fan to run faster when 3D apps run. My best guess at present is that the video card has a bad memory chip and I will need to get a new one. If anyone has a better idea, I'd like to hear it.

My DXDiag file can be found at the following link:- DxDiag.txt

Greebo, that is a sign the video card may be running out of resources (could be heat, but it sounds like resource related problems).  If you are running with shadows enabled, try setting the shadow texture size to a smaller value.

Thanks Skuzzy. Generally I only turn on self shadowing when I am taking screenshots of my skins offline. I find the cockpit shadows a bit distracting when playing the game. However I do have the option for shadows on other planes turned on and my shadow size is set to 2048. I'll try turning that off and see what happens.
