Annoying problem with ELSA Gladiac...
« on: November 29, 2000, 04:00:00 PM »
Salute aces,
recently I've upgraded to a ELSA Gladiac (GeForce2 GTS) with the ELSA Video Module attached. AH runs fine and the framereate under 32 bit is very satisfying.

But there is a problem:
Everytime I press the trigger on my stick the picture stutters for a second. This is very annoying if you do multiple, short burts of fire on an enemy - then the picture stutters the whole time. What I've found out so far:

- seems to be connected with muzzle fire; when looking out of side windows or on the dashboard (or whereever muzzlefire is not seen) the stutter does not appear...

- in 32 bit stutter is worse than in 16 bit

- disabling interrupt poll in the joystick setup helped a little

- tried newest ELSA drivers; no change

- fiddled with AH video setup (Triple Buffer etc.); no change

- reinstalled DX7a; no change

Anyone can help me???

...sry for the doublepost

Try to install NVidias reference drivers.

Staga, using the Detonator drivers isn't really an option for me because I need the original ELSA driver to get the video module to run...

But will try it out anyway... thx

---

ok - installed the Detonator3 drivers from NVida... no change... (and yes I did the right procedure, e.g. installing PCI standard VGA first)

Default color depth always use 32bpp
Buffer flipping Mode Auto select
Vertical Sync Off by Default
Full screne antialization method No Anti
Use up to O MB system--PCI mode

Direct 3D Settings
check on two---Enable Fog
& Adjust Z-Buffer
Midmap Best quality
PCI use 1 MB of system

I am using nvidia  .647 Drv

ScreamingEgle, thx for the advice - tried out all you said but no change...

But noticed some more things:

- seems to be connected with detailed ground textures; stutter only appears near ground

- dissappears when framerate drops below 20 or so

- no stutter in film playback

- moved around IRQ of GFX-card; no change

- FastWrite On causes AH to crash; was off by default

- maybe connected to sounds; cannot investigate further because AH doesn't starts without initialising soundcard and even if you put all sounds volume to zero in setup two gun sounds keep playing

- switching desktop to 1024*768 seems to help; colour depth has no effect

- Anti-Alising has no effect

- stutter does appear even when controlling plane with keyboard and mouse; joystick influence unprobable

my system specs:

AsusA7V
128 RAM 133
Elsa Gladiac GeForce2GTS
Soundblaster Live!
Saitek X36 Combo USB
CH Pro Pedals (gameport)
Elsa Microlink ISDN USB

running DX7a and newest drivers for all components

Try going to www.viahardware.com  and downloading VIA's Agp driver version 4.03e.  It might help.

I thought I'd add something else, maybe your soundcard is the culprit.  I once had a similar problem, the game would stutter badly when firing guns.  The problem ended being the soundcard drivers.

Try updating them as well.

Weeeeeeeee, thx for all the help guys!

The VIA AGP driver update brought salvation! Well, the problem is not totally gone but to a very acceptable degree!!! Enjoying AH in 32bit, high res and full speed now!

Btw, downloaded the GeForce tweaks someone mentioned in another GTS thread; any good settings?

Oh, one thing still needs to be solved: I get this blue flashing from time to time... very rarely e.g. when I am taxing or slipping on final... does not ruin the game but is a bit annoying...!

Sounds like more a sound problem then a video problem.
1) your sound card could be in the top PCI slot right below the AGP slot. THis is a big no-no the slots are actually the same slot in a few ways. they use the same DMA and IRQ witch can cuase some massive problems. the only thing that slot should be used for is something that doesn't take resorces (voodoo 1 voodoo 2 or a slot fan).
Secondly what sounds are you using I have a big fat sound whels gave me for the F4u and p47. every time I raise or lower gear it studders the video for a very fast dureation (less then a second). It's noticeable and it's cuase by the size and length of the sound. If it where my engine or guns Ide have to replace it but becase its just my gear and It sounds so fat and realistic (my neighbors hate it) I leave it in.

Oh and I forgot to mention Yoru taxing the hell out of your processor. Tune your system. try to get away from that USB modem/nic it uses alot cpu cycles. your joystick also uses alot becuase it runs software in the background try getting as much stuff as you can out of the background (virus scanners, schedulers ect) use msconfig if you need to and try to get your system resorces above 90% free.

Oh ya BTW how is the Video module. Iam thinking of getting a elsa gladiac ultra but only If the video module does what i need it to do (watch TV/VCR on computer with good video capture not to mention I want to record some some game play to my VCR) and it does it well. Iam currently using a voodoo 3500tv I can live without a TV tuner if I have good video in, I have a VCR witch can do the tuning for me.
