Just Canceled my Newspaper delivery
« on: June 06, 2010, 11:49:06 AM »
doing what I like to do every sunday morning...I tore into my local newspaper of choice (Sun Sentinel, Ft. Lauderdale)...and was quite disturbed....then just pissed....that there was no mention of D day...whatsoever.

I could not be happier that the newspaper business is dying.

I don't understand your surprise.  It's not as though an event that happened 66 years ago can be considered newsworthy.  The general public have little or no interest in high-brow ancient history - they need to know which celebrities are shagging each other or getting divorced, what's happening in the World Cup and who won Britain's Got Talent.

I searched all the British national newspapers and could only find one story amongst the lot.  In the Guardian to boot.  Oh, the irony.

I'm afraid we'll probably have to wait for the 70th or 75th anniversaries - they may be worth some coverage.

There really are no news papers anymore. There are no news groups on TV. There are only folks who voice their opinion and flaunt it as fact.

At some point events move from the news to the history books.

Well, it is the Sun Sentinel!  And it caters to Broward residents.

My wife reads it, so we get it.  I prefer the coupon and circular section of that paper.

We have a friend that works there, and I've told her several times of grammatical errors, typos, and spelling errors, and asked her how those things make it through their editors.

Oh, I think Tom Jicha is pretty funny when he replies to readers' letters, and the local sports coverage has improved over the years. :)

Regarding this:

At some point events move from the news to the history books.

My initial feeling is that events shouldn't be moved into history books while there are still living participants.

I deliver two paper routes and read the Boston Globe, NYT, the Boston Herald Sports section due to its crappy everything else, and the Wall Street Journal. Each has a "side" they take, but once you take all of your sources to heart you can find the truth inside them...

History in the past has always been an opinion...rarely fact...the sooner the Lame Stream Media goes the way of the buggy whip the better...

Helen Thomas and Dan Rather come to mind....

They have ill served humanity with their twisted/agenda version of reality...

Good Riddance...

Viva the internet and the free exchange of 'opinion' and 'fact'...the way we write and record history has forever changed...

I had the same complaint about the TV and cable channels. Especially History Channel.
Ron White says you can't fix stupid. I beg to differ. Stupid will usually sort itself out, it's just a matter of making sure you're not close enough to become collateral damage.

Stopped paying for a paper a year ago. Only thing in it worth reading was the wed coupons for grocery's. When they dropped those to once a month it was no longer viable.

As for shows on TV, its terrible.

Sci-fi has changed it's name and gone grade c horror movies mostly.
Military channel has something worth watching perhaps once in 24 hr period.
History channel has become totally worthless.

Even with a DVR I'm lucky to find a good show once a week thats really worth taking the time to watch.

it's just part of the re-educating of Amerika ... and the world.

from the media to the public school systems, if you were able to jump 100 years into the future, I think today's history would be replaced with a kinder, more PC non-existent course of events ..ie the Ministry of Truth.
