I thought Gatos were in the war from the beginning, at least since 1941 when the US entered the war.
They were built from 40-44 but the first wasn't commissioned 'til '43.
You'll notice a couple of things now, and at my direction.
1. I said nothing about when they were built.
2. Gatos weren't in service early war - and that's a fact you could've easily checked prior to posting.
2. I made reference to their status late-war and made no reference to their presence early war.
That they were extremely competent subs and were in service late war is entirely correct. Also note, Gato was the most numerous class of US subs deployed in WWII.
I point this out not to give you a hard time but to save you one, for such slips will get you generally roasted around here, the clientele being fairly concerned with accuracy both in your data and your comprehension. Distinctions matter here. For me, it's a fairly easy jump, given that no one in my life/work/history is/was especially tolerant of "whatevah". For others, it's more of a challenge.
