bad frame rates
« on: June 12, 2010, 07:17:11 PM »
Just recently my frame rates have been dropping. One minute it will be at 60 then it drops to 9 for a second or so.
It looks like I may somehow have two sound cards on there.I only have the one onboard card. Maybe I am mis reading it?
It may be coincidence but it seems like it started with the last patch.

Just to clear it up, you only have the one sound card installed.  The "Description: Digital Audio (S/PDIF) (High Definition Audio Device)" (if I remember right from when I had it) is the Audio output for HDMI from the GPU.  If you plugged in a little thin black wire from the GPU to motherboard that would be it.  Also, your GPU doesn't need to have HDMI for it to show up or be plugged in...but it is pointless.  I had that same thing with my GTX 260 but I have no HDMI, just the cord and the "second" sound installed.

As for the problem, I'm clueless.  Everything looks fine to me.  Short of a background task messing with the game somehow, either-way I'll let Skuzzy do the troubleshooting.

Thanks for the replies fellas <S>

1701E- Thanks for filling me in on that. I had looked it up later and I thought it just to be an add on feature but wasnt sure.Like you I dont even have the thing pluged in to anything at the moment. I will check and make sure nothing extra has recently sneeked into my background task manager.

Chalenge- When I first bought that monitor there were no specific drivers for it. It was just plug and play. I will have to go back to theyre web site and see if there is anything new. It always played fine before though.

I reloaded all my drivers and game. I noticed the frame rate drop appeared to be around any town when things got real busy. I turned the detail down and it seems to have helped. I havnt played during peek hours in some time and I am thinking maybe with the extra planes and what have ya around the town it may be taxing my system.

Thanks again

Pipz, what do you have your "shadows" set on? That seems to be the one that kills most people.

Hello Fugi
I have the shadows on my own plane but off on the others.Keep in mind though it ran fine like that for the past month or so when I have played. When I have loged on lately it was usualy when the numbers in the arena were a bit lower. The other day I was on when a lot more of the other guys were on. I think when I get near the town and there is to much stuff going on it puts too much of a load on my system. To be sure I reloaded the game and all my drivers.I also lowered the antialaising a bit. Yesterday it ran pretty good when I was on. My frame rates didnt drop into the single digits. Ill turn the shadows off and mess with the setting more if I continue to have problems. Thanks for the help Fugi !

I would get a stand alone sound card and get your sound process off your cpu.

What boss said. If you are using onboard audio then you are taxing your cpu to the breaking point. I suggest staying away from brand 'C' and going with something like the Xonar or my favorite the HT Omega Striker 7.1 (lowest CPU usage of any card I have found). This will help a great great deal but you need to get a good driver for your monitor also so that you are in the actual native mode for the monitor and so the refresh rate is set properly. Until you do that the advanced graphics setting changes dont really mean anything because the audio is where the load is and any tests wont really give you an idea of your performance potential.

Thanks fellaz !
I was just in the arena and it ran ok. I have an old Sound Blaster Audigy laying around but Im not sure If I want to throw that in. Its a pretty old card so I dont know if that would do me any good. Maybe I'll buy one in the near future. I looked for drivers for the monitor again and cant find much. One web page wants to put a driver detector on my machine and I wasnt keen to that. Nothing came with the monitor and I havnt found anything on Westinhouse's web page <shrugs>.

Also note, after a fresh system boot up, you can experience pauses and delays in the game due to the "Superfetch" process in Windows Vista and Windows 7.  Kill that process.  It really is not worth the trouble it causes.

Thanks for that tip Skuzzy. I looked up how to shut Superfetch off and will give it a go the next time I log on.

Chalenge I am looking into getting a Xonar. They seem to get good reviews.

Thanks for the help fellaz <S>
