Can someone please explain the difference between Athlon 1.4GHz, Athlon MP 1600+ (1.4GHz) and Athlon XP 1600+ (1.4GHz)?

Hiya,
1st 1.4 is a standard ceramic based TB
The MP is a Server/Workstation variant
The XP is the latest none ceramic based chip
Here's pics to show the difference

If you are after a new TB go for a decent coded (read about these on overclockers.com or alike) TB or a newer XP

The XP also has a somewhat refined core and a new version of 3DNow that includes all of the SSE instructions. Note that it does not have the SSE2 instructions that the P4 introduced. The next major revision of the Athlon core will add those.

The Athlon XP and Athlon MP are actually identical now. The MPs are just certified to work in multiprocessor mode.

The XP has a few improvements over the old Thunderbird: Hardware Prefetch logic, increased TLB buffer size, thermal diode, full SSE support, and reduced power consumption. In short it's a little bit faster than the old Thunderbird Athlon at the same clock speed, and has reduced power consumption.

I was wondering cuz TB and XP are virtually the same price and MP is ~50% more expensive than XP
