Upgrading ACM game card- F22 Digital Upgrade
« on: October 17, 2001, 06:25:00 PM »
Couple of questions of the TM experts

Have been using a thrustmaster ACM game card for a number of years very successfully but am upgrading to a new motherboard /system which does not have old slots - PCI only.

Is there a PCI ACM or equivalent ?

If not - does it matter, should I just use the std game port on the new computer (hercules sound card) ?

I am ordering the F22 digital upgrade from stickworks - will that mean I need to have different/additional cabling to run a pair of CH rudders ?

Any help appreciated - I have to do everything by mail to the US (from Australia) so don't want to be ordering the wrong things
I come from a land downunder

I've just heard about a neat gizmo out there that sells for less than $50 US. It's an analog joystick port-to-USB converter. Radio Shack sells one for $16.00 US

and there's another brand out there that can be had for $26 US.

I may try try it to see if I can eliminate my CH Gamecard III (ISA slot card) that I use with my CH gear. Because my next PC won't have an ISA slot either and I'll need to figure out a method of using my peds, stick and throttle short of buying all new USB gear.

You should be fine with the standard game port, and you'll still plug your rudders in like you always have.  You just won't have to plug all the extra cables in (only the joystick cable)  :).

I'd stay away from any port converter, as it'd probably screw up the Stickworks drivers.

I've only had 50/50 success with gameports and Win98SE2.  4 systems... 2 had no probems and two wouldn't recognize the gameport.

To my knowledge there is not a PCI card from TM on the market and I do not believe there are plans for them to make one.  Especially with the new TM Cougar setup being all USB.

I have the F-16 FLCS setup running through my gameport on my sound card and I have tried running the gameport-to-USB converters with no luck.

I don't know what connection (if any other than the gameport) digital upgrade chips need but I think a standard gameport should work fine.
