Bomber formation adjustment
« on: June 27, 2010, 09:04:24 AM »
I was flying Lancasters over the weekend (ineffectively I might add... I guess I'm no good at bombing CV's) and was thinking it would be nice to be able to adjust the spread of the bomber formation.  I was thinking by using the arrow keys using left would spread them out and using right would tighten them up, using up would move the drones forward and down would move them back.

The adjustment would have to be limited and wouldn't have to be huge; something akin to using the zoom keys in external view.  This way you could loosen the formation for strat carpet bombing or tighten it up for anti CV work as examples.

I don't think this should make buff gunning any more or less effective as long as the convergence point remains the same regardless of drone positions.  While I wouldn't want gunning to become more effective another idea might be that as the bombers spread the convergence moves back, possibly even beyond the guns range making gunning more of a shotgun effect while tightning the formation moves the convergence in, actually reducing effective range.  In this situation I would think the pilot shouldn't be able to effect the drone spread while in a gun... he would have to "set it and forget it".  Regardelss, I lean more toward leaving the convergence as is but this would be another option to consider if this were to be implemented.

This, combined with salvo and delay settings, would make for a fully flexible bombing formation and add another dimension to the bombing game.
I edit a lot of my posts.  Get used to it.

Or a other kinds of formations like a straight line formation with auto timing of drops.

Combat box formations, even multiple staggered alt combat boxes, were the most prevalent formations in WW2. Better defensive coverage, and it helped to avoid each other's prop wash.
