The sloping armor of the German Panther tank was a response to a similar feature on the Russian T-34, although the basic Panther design traces its roots back to the pre-war years. Pursuing this process of one-upmanship, the Germans created the best tank of the Second World War when they introduced the Panther in January 1943. It was deployed in time for the battle of Kursk, its first major engagement.

The Panther was a medium tank with decent speed, satisfactory reliability, heavy German FHA 80-85mm sloped frontal armor and very good firepower. The Panther's high velocity 75mm gun could penetrate the armor of all Allied tanks, making it a lethal adversary. The tank's top speed was 28 MPH. The Panther's design featured a torsion bar suspension system and interleaved wheels, which allowed it to go practically anywhere. Some 4814 Panthers were produced before the end of the war.

It was a particularly dangerous foe for the American, Canadian and British Sherman tanks, which were simply no match for the Panther. The Panther was faster, more reliable, more maneuverable and could go more places than its larger running mate, the Tiger tank. Its sloped armor gave it nearly the immune zone of the heavier Tiger.

Had Germany won the war, I believe that the Panther would today have a service record and longevity comparable to that achieved by the Russian T-34. As they say, winning is everything.

"The main gun was a 7.5 cm Rheinmetall-Borsig  KwK 42 (L/70) with 79 rounds (82 on Ausf. G) with semi-automatic shell ejection. The main gun used three different types of ammunition, APCBC-HE (Pzgr. 39/42), HE (Sprgr. 42) and APCR (Pzgr. 40/42), the last of which was usually in short supply. While it was of only average caliber for its time, the Panther's gun was one of the most powerful tank guns of WWII, due to the large propellant charge and the long barrel, which gave it a very high muzzle velocity and excellent armor-piercing qualities. The flat trajectory also made hitting targets much easier, since accuracy was less sensitive to range. The Panther's 75 mm gun had more penetrating power than the main gun of the Tiger I heavy tank, the 8.8 cm KwK 36 L/56,[52]  although the larger 88 mm projectile might inflict more damage if it did penetrate.[53]"

If anything, it would probably be perked at what the Tiger sits at now, and the Tiger's perk price would drop by 5-10.  I wouldn't drop it any lower than 10, since it DOES have a good amount of armor.  With excellent armor and a deadlier gun than our Tiger, it's going to definitely be perked.  I foresee the demise of many a T-34 by the oh so beautiful Panther.

The Panther was a great tank which incorporated many of the best features of the T-34 such as sloping armour and a powerful 75mm main gun - but it was rather prone to breaking down, which is why not a few of them were captured by the Soviets. Some sims reproduce the unpredictability the war by programming-in the occasional breakdown (this ol' cat recalls his IL-2 I-16's engine stopping on climb-out and plunging to his death in the forest beyond the airfield), maybe HT might consider doing the same for AH aircraft and AFVs to add to the immersion factor?

Out of the tanks we have in AH, the Firefly could meet the Panther 1v1 and have a very reasonable expectation of winning. The 76mm Sherman using APCBC ammunition can score a kill on a Panther with a shot to its mantlet or flank.  Of the tanks we don't have, there were numerous ones that could defeat the Panther in a 1v1 engagement that include such vehicles as the M36 tank destroyer (with its 90mm main gun), Pershing and even Super Pershing tanks.  The Soviets also fielded a tank or two that were able to defeat the Panther in a 1v1 engagement.

I would say yes to the Panther because it is a wonderful tank, with enough suspension to glide over Belgium Blocks and sheep all day with the ability to shoot straight. Very accurate tank gun with a GREAT range of about 3,000 ft and further. Decent armor, all around great tank.
