Rockets firing backwards
« on: July 02, 2010, 07:34:34 PM »
Has anyone ever had their tail shot off, and shoot your rockets? I had this happen yesterday, and my rockets fired backwards in the direction of the momentum of the plane. It's not very important, but I wonder if I should post it in the bug reports, or if it is even supposed to do that.

What would a rocket do if it was traveling at 200 mph, then ignited in a direction perpendicular to the direction of travel?  :headscratch:

Would it fire off in the direction it was pointing?
Would it tumble out of control?
Would it right itself to the initial direction of travel?

Heck, I only made a B in Physics I.  Can someone from the aerospace industry provide a clue?

If a detailed flight model was put on the rocket, what direction they eventually went would depend on the speed you are falling in at. And could be mostly backwards. They will leave the tube at a certain net velocity. They will start to rotate towards the direction of travel just like throwing a dart backwards will rotate and still hit point first.

For purpose of AH we simply always have the rocket rotate to its ballistic path which is determined by the velocity of leaving the tube + the velocity of the airplane, I.E. it rotates instantly.

Begs the question as to how often you fire rockets with your tail shot off  :uhoh

Whenever I get shot down attacking the base, I try and make it a last ditch effort to damage the base with the rockets when the nose swings around. But apparently that won't work very well.  :lol
