My pile of junk won't run Aces High
« on: November 23, 2001, 02:12:00 PM »
I'm having serious problems running Aces High.

I'm getting less than 20 FPS, and then only at altitudes of 15K, when I'm alone. Most often, I'm barely getting 10 FPS. Also, I'm seeing constant large warps by the enemy, fast warps of 1.5K or more, and surges of 500 by friendlies.

I notice that while I have a video card with 32MB, AH shows there to be 25MB, with 6MB in use and 19MB free.

I'm running at 1024X768 resolution with 16 bit color because that gives the best performance.

What I have is a Compaq Presario 5220, a real pile of junk. I've done some upgrading, so only the motherboard and case remain. I think the motherboard is the problem, since a system with the same components EXCEPT the Compaq motherboard scores 3.5 times higher on 3DMark 2001. My score was 400, the other system was over 1400.

I have:
AMD 550K6-2
384MB PC 100 RAM
3dfx Voodoo 4 4500 32MB PCI video card
ESS onboard audio
Seagate 8.4 Gig HD UDMA 33

The system is tweaked as far as it will go, with cacheman 3.1, the video card is overclocked to 192MHz, and all memory and system optimized.

Anyone have any ideas? Besides replacing this junk pile.

Your problem area is the K6-2.  The FPU unit on the K6 chips is quite weak.

I'd reccomend a Duron, Athlon or Pentium III as an upgrade.

karnak is right. I used to run this game on a k6-2 550, but it simply won't cut it anymore. your best bet is to order a new board, chip, ram, and a case too if you can't reuse your old one.

Have you turned off ground clutter? Have you turned the detail down? This may be enough to get you going.
