DFW area computer techs
« on: July 08, 2010, 09:16:38 PM »
I bought this system a couple of years ago specifically to play AH.    If it shuts down due to a power failure I have to completely unplug it for a minimum of half an hour and pray that it will come back on.  Additionally if that happens I lose my settings on my CH and my TrackIR gear.  I've got all of my docs and programs saved to an external and have tried ripping and rebuilding XP a couple of times to no avail.

Does anybody know a good tech in the DFW area that can help me because, frankly, I'm at my wits end.

DXDIAG to follow

When you it losses power are you talking about your 120AC house current or the computer shuts down ?  I no expert, but it sounds like your computer is over heating. take the side cover off and see how much dust is in there.
If it's some what clean, my next guess would be a faulty power supply. Also noticed your DXdiag does not indicate a make and model. While the side cover is removed, check all your plugs and connectors.
I sure somebody else smarter than I will chime in with other suggestions, but this is a start. Also noticed video drivers are out of date, back off the hardware acceleration one notch,a USB hub with a lot of amps for your CH gear
wouldn't hurt. Totally unrelated to your power problem, but just some thoughts..

Need some more information to make a determination... is there a power outage to your home, or does the PC just turn itself off as if it lost power?

If it gets shut down or there is a power outage to it I have to let it sit for 30 minutes to an hour to get it restarted.  I ran into this issue before, replaced the power supply, and it worked just fine for a while.  When it gets shut down and won't restart the system clock resets to 2001 and I lose all of my settings (AH and the like).  I've run AVG, ripped and rebuilt it several times, run chkdsk, and the like.  Now I'm beyond my expertise.

What I'd love to do is take it to someone who knows this stuff a whole lot better than I do and let them fix it for me.  I'll post the full dxdiag later today.

Edit.  When it's up and running it does a fine job which is most of the time.

If you you are losing settings the battery that keeps the bios "alive" may be dead. It is about the size of a quarter. replace it.
It maybe a CR3032 or something like that. You can buy them at Wal-mart. K-mart, Radio Shack..

The dxdiag info that you posted is enough and you definately have a dead mobo battery.

You probably have more than one issue going on. The power supply one thing, could just be dust/dirt but more likely it's a capacitor. If you haven't cleaned the inside of your system out, clean out your heat sinks, fans, etc...then get yourself good quality power supply at least 700 watts. I've also seen the behavior when a capacitor on the motherboard starts bulging/leaking. Look on your motherboard for something like what's in the picture...

If you have any bulging/leaking capacitors on the mobo, it's time for a new one.

Col

Located the battery.  Fairly easy to replace.

Gyrene.

Inside is pretty clean.  I'm kind of stickler on that subject.  But, on your advice, I took my flashlight to it and don't see any signs of a bad capacitor.

I, TRULY, appreciate yalls time on this issue.  <S>
