Heading back to University...
« on: July 18, 2010, 03:36:01 AM »
after 10 years of absence. Never could complete the degree... mainly 'cause I couldn't decide on one but also due to having to work.

Taking my last 2 courses for my Associate in Arts Degree in the local state college this fall and next year will head on to UCF for my bachelor's in Anthropology (focus on Archeology).

This coming Monday I'll meet with a UCF adviser to see if I can do a double major... from what I could mix and match with classes I can end up with BA in Anthropology and BA in Interdisciplinary Studies (focus on History and Writing) along with 3 minor degrees (Writing, World Comparative Studies and History) and 3 certificates (Cultural Tourism, IT Network Security and Crime Scene Investigation).

The univ. catalog has a rule for the interdisciplinary studies BA:

"Students wishing to earn an Interdisciplinary Studies degree as
a double degree, double major, or second major, must complete
all restricted elective credits exclusive of the credits done for the
other degree(s) or major(s), including any minors associated with
that degree or degrees"

Underlined are the parts that have me worried (and which is why im meeting the adviser this far in advance). My Anthropology BA does not share any classes with the I.S. BA ... but it does share a lot of classes with the History and Writing Minors (which id love to have on my diploma because history 'helps' you get jobs along with archeology and writing 'helps' in many other fields... but if they're not in the diploma it wont be seen in the job market. sigh).

If the adviser says no ill have to look for another 2nd BA or drop the idea of the 2nd BA altogether and just get the minor degrees.

funny thing is im doing my BA because gdamn i have to do it and nows the time.. and because it opens the door to immigrate to new zealand.... but to do that I also need a job offer and I dont know if its better to have 2 BA's or 1 BA + multiple minors to get a job there (in things not anthropology related... just in case the job market is dead in that field).

I did the same thing this past fall.  I'd been out of school for 15 years with a real job, but the whole time I've been saving money for "some day" when I'd go back.  It always seemed far off in the future, and then I got laid off from my job of 9 years.  So all of the sudden, bam, I'm a student again.  While my old company is going down the tubes (if I am to believe my friends who still work there), I'm hanging out with the co-eds almost half my age every day, hah.

Anyways the first time I was in Aeronautical Engineering at Purdue and I never graduated.  15 years later I found out only some of my credits are going to be counted, and those not counted included all of my calculus, which the first time I passed four semesters of.  Which was a good thing because I didn't even remember sines and cosines, let alone any of the calc.  So I spent a semester at the local community college retaking stuff I took in high school, then transferred in to Purdue for the fall, this time in Industrial Management (same major as Drew Brees btw).

I actually looked at going into Purdue's flight school, but a) they are only taking incoming freshman, no transfers, b) its really expensive and hard to pay for if you don't have the money yourself, and c) its a really bad time to become a pilot.  I actually saw most people recommend that if you can't get a flying gig in the military (and I'm too old so I cannot), its best to get a non-flight degree, get a high paying job, pay for your own flight training at your own pace on the side, and wait for the economy to improve to where there's flying jobs out there again.  So that's my plan for now.

The good news is that I had a GPA good enough for Semester Honors last semester, my first back at Purdue.  Got an A in Calc 1 (which replaced my A from my first semester freshman year on my transcript... wonder how many people have done that?).  Joined a service fraternity where I get to know some of the college kids, most of them don't even guess that I'm over 30 years old when asked to guess my age... obviously none of them have ever had a job checking IDs, lol.  I should be done in 4-5 more semesters if I don't screw up, which I don't plan to.

Only bad news is that I kinda wish they would have waited a year and a half more to lay me off, by then I'd have enough money saved for the whole dang thing.  Looks like I'm going to be taking a few loans out, maybe the government will even give me money for having zero income this year, I dunno.  In any case, I'm glad I got laid off, it was the kick in the pants I needed to finish my degree and move on with my life.  Hope it works out similarly for you.

I had been away from college about 20 years when I went back for my MA. Other than taking military courses (Armor Officers advanced and Command and General Staff College) I hadn't really been in a classroom much at all. I found going back was far easier than I had thought it would be. I was able to maintain a 3.9 GPA (I hacked off one instructor when I criticised a book written by her best friend so she gave me a B+ instead of the A I earned) the whole time including picking up some undergraduate courses like chemistry and a couple art related courses. I had a ball going to school. The homework wasn't bad at all and I was able to relate to the material far better than when I was busting my butt getting my BA. By the time I was done 2 years later I was ready to stop though.

Later on I went back to school again in a junior college for my A&P. Since I already had a lot of other credits I was awarded an  Associates upon completion of the A&P program. I agree with Heinlein, it's good to stretch the mind instead of just vegetating. I may take a couple quick courses in something else if we stay in one place long enough.
DEFINITION OF A VETERAN
A Veteran - whether active duty, retired, national guard or reserve - is someone who, at one point in their life, wrote a check made payable to "The United States of America", for an amount of "up to and including my life."
