New ch fighterstick OTW
« on: July 17, 2010, 11:03:00 AM »
Ok.so I broke away from saitek after 3 years..will use the saitek throttle with the stick, and I have the saitek pedals.

Planning on running both saitek and ch programs for profiling..Still a bit nervous about the stick being bigger and not having as many buttons as my x52 stick.

Good deal man, you'll love it, I promise.  The Fighterstick will have more buttons than the x52 stick does, like the guy in front of me said.  You don't need to use the ch program to make it work in the game.  I don't use the CH program to do anything but calibrate, everything else I do through the AH keymapping and it works perfectly.  Back when I used to use hat switches, I liked to use the pinky button as the up view button, and I used the castle switch as the view hat.  That worked better for me comfort wise and so I could fly and look around as needed all at once.  Now that I have the TrackIR though, I have all those view buttons mapped to other stuff.  I think Homeboy's website even had an easy tutorial on how to make the castle switch into an 8 way hat instead of a 4 way.  It didn't look very hard at all, but you did  have to use the CH manager program to make that all work.  That may or may not help you at all.

you will be extremely happy with that set-up, I have the exact same system, Fighter stick is WAY beyond the X-52
it's like comparing a pinto(X-52) to a Lamborghini(CH Fighter Stick)

Plus I have also found a sweet very EASY way to turn the castle button on the Fighter stick to a view hat. which is a very good thing if you don't have huge mitts,  if ya got big hands then its a no issue, some people with regular hands do use it the way it comes I tried to for about 3 weeks but it is uncomfortable and quite a reach to get to the hat.

well I looked for it but cant find it if you are interested let me know I can find it just gonna take a bit.

Found it.

I have to say Ink that I had an x-52 for about three months when I first came back to sims last year.  My ch stick has way more buttons than it did.  Way more.  Three 4 way hats and one 8 way, and three buttons.  I don't remember my x52 having near that amount, but then it's been about a year since I've gone back to CH.

yea.I am pretty excited..I am sure I will try,if not use the programming..I read on homeboys site where one can shorten the joystick about 5/8" to help with the reach..but I will make that a last ditch effort..lol

I Am planning on using the slider on my 52 throttle as I have been for my zooming in.this has to go through the sd6 programming software for the 52.hopefully I can run them both at the same time, dont know why I couldnt..

If the difference between flight controllers was solely the number of buttons - we'd all use the keyboard instead.

The CH has 3 fundamental advantages over the Saitek:

1) Higher quality overall construction (translating to durability, and for most people, a tremendous reduction in calibration issues, spiking, and greater mechanical precision)
2) A dual spring tension system that increases resistance as you move the stick away from center (in contrast to the spring loaded sliding ring system that has the most tension at center)
3) Designed to be user repairable.  Potentiometers eventually wear.  If you've ever opened a Saitek X series, you realize very quickly that it's never meant to be repaired.  By contrast, you can easily replace a failing potentiometer or deal with a failing switch in the CH stick.

That's not to say that it's "perfect", or couldn't be improved upon.

Congratulations on your purchase, if you are like 98% of the people who've used both, you'll be very very happy with it.

PS. On the reach issue.  Shortening the stick is possible, but pretty drastic.  I used two layers of 1/2 foam from a "camping mattress" (the kind that's just a rolled up piece of foam) cut into rings with an a approximately handle shaped hole in the middle, which I then taped on top of the handrest of the stick to adjust the stick "temporarily" to the size of my hand.   It took about 10 minutes to do, didn't void any warranties, and could have been easily undone if I decided I didn't like it.

That was about 5 1/2 years ago - and I think I may have had to to re-tape it once since, but basically, I don't even think about it - it's part of the stick.

dont "shorten" the stick, the castle switch is VERY easy, took me like 10 minutes to widen the hole (thats opening it and putting it back together), and a half hour maybe an hour to program the ch software.

in the directions it says to use a "dremel" tool for widening the hole, I would sugjest against this, it was easy to use a sharp knife and just scrape around the hole, A Dremel may take off to much, unless you are very used to using the dremel just scrape in wider.

Ha, ok.

No wait, what about the wheel on the CH stick!!  I know it's not a button, but you can use it as an analog switch.  I use mine to control my rpms.

Hehe.

At any rate, I never really cared much for the x52, it seemed like the forces you needed to move the stick were reversed, you had to pull too hard to start the movement, then ease up after.  That always bugged me, even if it did have one more button.

well it's got three "wheels", the one on left I also use for RPM. the other two I dont use.

I was impressed with the look of the X-52 but very disappointed in it's...well every thing else. :rofl
